Label/Format: Charisma – original large pink Mad Hatter format with B&C credits [later ones were phonogram].

Label Conditions: Both in super conditions, immaculate, clean and highly attractive. Any of the tiny few spindle traces being ultra light and faint.

Cat Number: CAS 1074.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: An impressive 140 grams. Later pressings were much lighter and flimsy. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Very first pressings of this, arguably the best ever Genesis album, are scarcer. This one being even more so as it includes the lyric inner sleeve. Yes, inner sleeve, NOT the standard lyris sheet. These are far, far harder to find and only came with the very first issues. These were almost immediately dropped and then replaced by the insert sheet which is common to all the pink hatter pressings. I have seen so few of these before and no mention is even made to it in the Grishin specialist Charisma book. This card inner sleeve copy and heavier than average pressed record, in superb playing condition also, is one for the specialist collector and Genesis completist. Do not underestimate how few of these are around when compared to the standard and common card insert.

Brief Info: One of the best-loved Genesis albums and my personal favourite of the ‘Gabriel’ era. It even includes a hit single with ‘I Know What I Like’. More epic prog-rock with wonderful complex arrangements and immaculate sound and musicianship – this album has it all. This UK original plays beautifully and little unwanted and never take that for granted. Like many on this wonderful, but pressing-wise, unpredictable label, this is a known crackler. The date of issue can sometimes be blamed, but this is a heavy and quality pressed example. The inclusion of the far lesser-made card inner sleeve, rather than standard insert sheet is a bonus for the specialist collector and noteworthy for having a cleaner than average cover too.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: rarely seen devoid of considerable grubbiness. This is very pale and unless kept carefully, they often suffer.

Cover Grade and Format: Strong EX, an unlaminated single format with flat matt finish. This was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and has the first B&C credits and rarer lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Attractive and any grubbiness or marks very few and faint. No creasing and any traces of rubbing only apparent under light. This pale and unforgiving cover is seldom seen a great deal cleaner.

Cover Back: Pale yellow covers, few could be worse for showing grubbiness or marks. Again this has very little and the lack of ringwear a bonus on both sides.

Top Edge: A little mild glue residue browning is lightly apparent, that apart, little else to fault.

Bottom Edge: A little grubbiness near the left corner area, being the resting edge, this is hardly uncommon.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering with no trimming. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression. All text is present and unworn with no darkening or ageing.

Corners: Any tip rubs slight and fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong and attractsive all round example of this very delicate early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Let me make this clear: most copies of this album include either a thick or thinner card INSERT lyric sheet. This one includes the much rarer card INNER SLEEVE, a wallet that a record is stored in (as seen in my picture). This is double sided and includes the song lyrics. This is in Near Mint condition with no edge splits and it was never lined. A very dark green colour as per the original inserts, that compared to paler later ones. This is clean and uncreased and almost reminds of new. I have not seen one of these for years and years and I truly consider them scarce. Certainly a major variant for the specialist collector and Genesis fans who want the more unusual pieces.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ with little more than a few ultra fine and faint surface traces/hairlines as almost expected for a record stored inside a thick unlined card inner. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed – this is an unusually thick and heavier pressed copy of a record often thinnly pressed. This was the prime year for vinyl weight cutback due to the oil shortage of the time (yes I can remember the power cuts too). A copy very lightly played on all the evidence with these minor and faint visual blemishes causing no audio issues. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic prog classic plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a demanding album that has its fair share of quiet passages. Few copies will match or outperform this high quality early UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, likely in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
