Label/Format: Charisma – Early pink scroll format with B&C credits, this has the large P 1970 format publication date (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in incredible condition and struggling to see a noteworthy spindle trace at all. Very clean, fresh and highly attractive, any handling traces barely even register and just the odd tiny dull spot seen under angled light (this being somewhat critical). Try finding these much better.

Weight of this Record: 162 grams. A massive pressing, way over average for it’s or any other era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rarity for this classic progressive album is deemed by modest sales and it’s stunning condition. This only charted in the UK at a lowely 98, thus finding early pink copies is very difficult. I can hardly imagine finding this delicate album better, simply superb and incredibly challenging to find thus.

Original Year of Release: 1970. This having the large P 1970 format on the labels means a late 1970 or 1971 pressing.

Brief Info: Second album from one of progs most famous ever bands. This is the highly collectable Gabriel ‘Progressive’ era and this is a stunning all-round example. Massively pressed and no Charisma pressing issues on this quality EMI example. Complex, structured music that either appeals or doesn’t, this is certainly not the commercial sound this band eventually changed too later and their early music has to be worked on for maximum pleasure. The very clean, and most evidence suggests, barely even played record comes inside a stunningly clean cover and includes that elusive lyric insert which is also in very fine condition. An impossibly difficult record with much of the music quiet and delicate. This is not high-volume progressive music like King Crimson or van der Graaf Generator et al., but more subtle and gentle with bags of details and quality musicianship. Finding any vinyl copy that will treat this sensitive music with respect will be difficult and this sublime record does a wonderful job. I enjoyed this immensely and it had been some considerable time since I had heard this title on the pink label. Most seen are not worthy with grubby, worn-out covers and records played into the ground. For those who want a clean, barely run-in early pressing, well attention all audiophiles, it’s here!

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: pale artwork, fragile surfaces and thick heavy record inside, few will survive like this.

Cover Grade and Format: Critically graded EX+, but this is really better still being honest, rarely seen one better (if indeed ever). A gorgeous looking cover and this is a really hard one, minor edge rubs top and bottom the only reason why this is not EX++ or even Mint(-). A solid and thick made unlaminated gatefold format with fine texturing on both outside surfaces, the inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Later ones were printed by Howards and omitted the texturing.

Cover Front: Absolutely stunning, this is practically reference standard and I am struggling to find anything to fault. Not to be beaten, one mega fine surface trace near the right edge and a microscopic rub near the top right corner. Nothing is ever perfect in my opinion, you just have to look hard enough.

Cover Back: Very close again with just a faint scuff trace seen under light. Barely any grubbiness or handling traces at all with just ultra fine and faint record rim semi-rubs at the extreme top and bottom edges but any ink erosion minuscule. The lack of deep penetrating ringwear is all the more remarkable given the sheer weight and thickness of this record. This is a quality back to match the outstanding front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This has a smooth finish. Gorgeous with practically no evidence of any ageing or wear. The lack of toning or grubbiness is always great news and the artwork graphic is simply wonderful as seen on my close-up picture.

Top Edges: Light to light+ rubbing in places. Being pale coloured, this has minimal visual impact.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with practically no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and robust, straight with no compression and folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and dead parallel. No text was printed on this and the artwork shows barely any rubbing, any traces faint and very faint indeed.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs only, a fraction more on the spine top. All retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all round example of this very delicate and unforgiving early 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better, certainly a cover seldom seen this clean and devoid of wear. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Insert: This copyrighted 1970 and is in superb Mint(-) condition. The minus being a faint semi-crease near the left edge but it hardly even registers. A beautiful lyric insert that is near pristine – clean and unmark and clearly little handled. Printed one side only, even the non-print side is unmarked but the minor faint semi-crease can be seen more here. A classy insert that is printed on coloured paper.

The Inner Sleeve: EX++ This plain white unlined inner has barely any wear at all but the one and only original owner put the songs times neatly on one side on pencil. So clearly, they could be erased easily, but I decided to leave as it is, the decision can be left with any new owner. Barely any creasing with no splits or tears and no edge splits (or repairs). Barely any traces of toning or glue darkening either.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Even grading this diamond Mint(-) is not doing it full justice. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, jet black and massively pressed on high-quality EMI pressed vinyl. A copy played once, maybe twice and not even run-in in vinyl terms. Try finding this prog classic better, one to thrill the most demanding collector.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime record plays up too its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is a real delicate and intricate album (as already stated) and ‘silence’ via vinyl is probably almost unrealistic but this outstanding copy gave an incredibly impressive performance is an exceptional clean pressing. No Charisma pressing sounds or distortions, these are far from uncommon on this label. The hidden dangers of records of course and Charisma unfortunately can often disappoint. This is why I could never offer any record that is not play-graded in it’s entirely. This failed to disappoint: the details of the different instruments and delicate sounds were impressive and this is no easy task. Those tiny details embedded into deep unworn grooves give the ultimate listening experience, this deserves to be heard again on a quality system and this copy is more than up to the task. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing I feel sure. The lack of clicks on these fine grooves is again a bonus, one slip or jolt and there’s another copy ruined – this has nothing like that and even surface traces sounds are minuscule. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful vintage prog classic. This copy will prove beyond difficult to find better and my highest possible recommendation applies. Simply fantastic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
