Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks on the lesser side of moderate on side one and only light on two. These reasonably faint and most lie within the inner ring ridge. A copy played a few times on this evidence, but still a strong copy that for it’s vast majority offers very clean and pleasing sound – this too for a very difficult record.

Cat Number: CAS 1020.

Weight of this Record: 139 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first issue. This is a very fine all-round copy – not perfect with a little gentle cover ageing and the record has three or four light marks, these have only minimal affect on sound which overall is impressive. One of the most difficult albums in the Genesis catalogue having quite a few quiet passages. I make no excuses for a 42-year-old record having the odd minor blemish or two. Most bought records to play them and few will escape without the odd minor mark and audio blemish. But in terms of this quite gentle album, which I regard as one of the Genesis classics, this has little to really worry about unless total perfection is mandatory. If an original one of these can truly boast CD silence, well it will be a copy in a many hundred and even from brand new it could not be guaranteed, especially on this label that is known to be inconsistent. A case-in-point, I have just played a ‘Pawn Hearts’ by van der Graaf Generator on the the same label - it looks near mint and barely even played – it sounds horrible with one side with loud and consistent hiss within the pressing. No visual evidence, but it certainly sounds horrible (and it will never be offered). So Charisma records around this time especially were a lottery. This one is very well pressed and sounds great, just a few gentle and very infrequent ticks – some almost ear-to-speaker faint and if a little compromise can be made, this is a very strong copy.

Brief Info: The classic second album from one of the UK’s most famous ever progressive rock bands. Early Genesis played complex, structured music and this is a fantastic album with truly beautiful songs. With quiet passages, this demands a clean pressed record to glean maximum pleasure. This vintage original offers something quite close to that – the pressing standard from this G and A stamper copy is clean with no inherent pressing noises, distortions or crackle. Yes, a tiny few mostly fine marks do (very briefly) emit a few very light and faint ticks, but little else. This almost part of the old vinyl experience, but the sheer beauty of the music more than wins the day and I enjoyed this record immensely. Not for the perfectionist, but most fans and collectors will enjoy it.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a mat, gently textured finish. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the correct B&C credits as seen on my close-up picture. Includes the original lyric insert and plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This very early printing has a slightly darker finish than some with rich colour and no fading, even to the spine edge that is very prone. With very close inspection, under angled light, a few very faint surface trace or light toning spots are (just) evident with the odd fine edge crease (but look hard), but any traces of rubbing are ultra faint. No sticker issues or scuffs and the artwork looks fantastic. Just the mildest clues to it’s considerable vintage, and remember, non-laminates are way, way harder to find clean and so devoid of real wear. This front will never prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is similar overall, with just fraction more wear. A light rim arc near the top edge that has darkened a little and even less near the bottom edge. But this has not removed any ink and few will avoid this faintest trace of ring wear – it hardly gets less, smaller or fainter than this. A few minor marks seen again under light and the only crease is a small semi-one near the bottom left corner – hardly a crease at all actually. What also sets this cover apart from many is the lack of rubbing to the spine hinge folds that are both fully laden with ink with no scuffs, creases rubs or tip-ins. In fact, there are NO tip-ins or enhancements to any area of this splendid cover. Both outer faces are strong and look attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Mildly darkened with age with the odd minor faint tone trace or tiny mark. The central graphic is breathtakingly beautiful – I just had to photograph it in close-up and prove how clean this especially is.

Top Edges: A small rub or chip to the back a little right of centre. Any rubbing is light and little really registers on quite pale surfaces. Both remain straight.

Bottom Edges: One tiny chip on the front and a little rubbing to the final half inch of the front right. A trace of thickening on the back end inside panel (being quite critical). Again both straight and it’s rare to see these traditional storage edges with so little overall wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still sharp with minimal traces of any thickening or burring. Both guaranteed untrimmed. The record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine given all the facts – clearly vulnerable to just about everything, including fading if exposed to too much direct sunlight in storage. Solid, straight with barely a hint of wear and no compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely and parallel. All the artwork is unrubbed with just a small and quite gentle rub to the top, and even less to the bottom. No fading or discolouration worthy of special mention, it has no text matter, just graphic. Both fold hinges are equally clean and unworn, which as mentioned already, if very unusual. An intact spine like this makes the difference between average and exceptional – especially on such an early one.

Corners: All the corner tips have fairly small rubs, how many will avoid this being honest? Very fine shape and general neatness is retained, with just the spine top with the most significant of the small rubs.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover in impressive condition, any blemishes or ageing are small, light and faint – just hints of it’s considerable vintage – and personally, I have no qualms in that. A classic and difficult cover that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white, solid unlined inner that has aged little. Minimal crease traces or marks and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off Mint(-). Printed one side only and coloured on both. Crisp, fresh and clean with barely any hint of creasing and all edges very sharp. Fairly thin paper, so rarely seen like this and often missing altogether. The odd tiny tone spot trace the reason for falling a fraction below my highest grading.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: I think this being quite conservative really. It has three or four fine marks, but they have little impact on sound, that throughout is impressive, especially given the nature of the music which is quite gentle in places. Any sound in the form of ticks (my term for a very gentle click) are mostly very light and faint, some almost ear-to-speaker so. There are two moderate clicks after ‘Stagnation’ on the joining groove, but missing the music either side. A copy that is very clean with excellent shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed. Both playing surfaces are attractive and devoid of dulling or pressing marks, beautifully pressed by EMI for Charisma. Like the cover, a few small blemishes, but if absolute perfection is demanded (if you can even find one), they will have a premium price to match for sure. Visually again, this will please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog classic offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive overall, with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A few gentle ticks and two moderate clicks between tracks one and two on side two as stated above. The lack of crackle on this title is quite unusual, this too played on a very revealing system and this has always been a challenging album with several quiet passages and gentle music. Any surface sounds are very few, gentle, faint and infrequent – I will never say silent, but way above average, certainly on this label and material. An intricate recording and work and not that commercial compared to their later titles. No pressing or cutting noises, this never certain on this label until you have played it. This copy will prove quite difficult to find better. It will offer the odd gentle reminder of what it truly is – a 42-year-old vinyl record – will any Trespass not? – I doubt it. I enjoyed this copy immensely, not for the perfectionist, but many, and even possibly, most fans and collectors will treasure it, it merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
