Label Conditions: Both in stunning clean conditions that really do remind of new. Ultra clean and attractive with barely a trace of a spindle mark on side one and only three or four fine traces on side two. The full Spiral on side one is pristine from rim to hole, they hardly get better than this. Side two still a snowy white with no fingermarks or handling traces or grubbiness. A copy clearly hardly played reitterated by two immaculate playing surfaces and sound. With record, cover and even the inner – which looks almost like new – this is an exceptional example that will delight most fans of this most prized label. Possibly a strong upgrade for the serious Vertigo collector.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce: like most of the Swirl titles, this is not getting any easier to find and especially in such lovely clean conditions.

Brief Info: Arguably their best Vertigo album - Gentle Giant were always a little more challenging than some progressive bands. Complex music patterns with many time and structure changes - you either love or loathe them, but for sure they were original and had their own unique sound. Talking of sound, their production values were amongst the best and this, and other from their catalogue were of audiophile standard. They usually appealed to fans of Yes, King Crimson, van der Graaf Generator and similar bands. ‘Three Friends’ is a concept album about, well, three friends. and their journey through life and experiences. This was their third album and my personal favourite from their catalogue, never too easy to find on the Swirl format - copies with clean, little-worn covers and records are very hard to track down. This cover is attractive with minimal wear and the record plays with fantastic and mostly very clean sound, certainly a strong example for the Spiral collector. Just look at the inner as well, I am actually asking myself if I have ever seen a better one since new purchases back in the 70s.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: most-all Vertigo covers were unprotected and suffered accordingly. Few avoid rubbing, grubbiness and especiall ringwear. The famous Spiral inners also suffer all forms of wear, often spoilt by glue browing on the seams and rarely are they seen without considerable amounts.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ with any blemishes minor. These wear so badly and are highly susceptible to just about all forms of wear and damage. Like most, this is an unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: One or two very small edge rubs apart, this front has little to fault and looks exceptional. Devoid of the usual heavy rubbing, creasing, grubbiness and sticker tears that affect so many. This has real freshness and has clearly been little handled and well protected, any edge creases are ultra few and faint, this sets the bar very high.

Cover Back: Very similar again with just a fine record rim arc near the top edge. Almost the least that can be expected on this one as many have full penetrating rings that ruin their fine looks. This is simply superb as I hope my pictures prove. The boxed VO Price Code near the top right corner is unworn.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Nothing to fault inside here, truly as made and so hard like this.

Top Edges: Any rub traces on these very straight pair are minuscule, so-much-so, I will say both will prove near impossible to find better.

Bottom Edges: Light rubbing only, being the resting edges, few will ever escape a little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with little wear and no feathering, couple of tiny burr traces being critical and guaranteed, untrimmed. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: A super spine overall with just a couple of tiny surface chips. Very solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is unworn with just an ultra fine central surface crease from the cover being opened over the years. This I reitterate, ULTRA fine.

Corners: All the corners have light tip rubs, most bottom front right, mostly fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better. This attractive Swirl cover should please most collectors.

The Inner: Mint(-) and of truly exceptional quality. This being the rarer later design and correctly dated for this issue. Please see the close-up of the date code which is 0372 (March 1972). This is immaculate and will remind those of a certain age what a new one once looked like. Just the faintest of faint traces of glue darkening near the top opening edge stops a full Mint grading. As clean and fresh as when made all those years ago, the window being exactly as manufactured. Creasing?, what creasing?, barely any of note at all. The polylining incredibly clear and unfogged and solidly adhered. The edges have no splits or stresses and even the flipback construction are solid and unlifted. The rarer of the inner formats in age-defying conditions, this is near specimen standard and puts the icing on what is already a very rich cake.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ with nothing more than the odd ultra fine surface traces or hairlines. A superb looking visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. This without any doubt has barely been played and looked after very carefully. Remember, even brand new records of this era often has the odd faint surface mark, manufacture was often less than subtle and often packing heavy-handed. It’s a total myth new records were always unmarked as collectors of my age will remember. Around 1972 to 1973 were not the best years for vinyl due to the oil shortage and skimping often occured. This is a fabulous Spiral record and will take something exceptional to match or better it. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-gem plays even above its high visual grading practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, odd gentle trace if being somewhat critical, but this has some really quiet passages and silence is a very tough ask on a record fast approaching forty. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Gentle Giant albums, like King Crimson and VDGG, were roller-coaster rides of loud and quiet passages. Few records this impressive age will ever play these types silently, its a near impossible ask. This one gives it a fine shot and this is up there with the best I have heard, this too on ultra sensitive equipment. A very clean performance with barely anything unwanted and I enjoyed this one immensely. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly indeed and has been clearly well stored and fairly carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the lack of any groovewear distortions especially are a bonus on such complex recordings and this retains its audiophile quality clarity with perfectly focused sound. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better for sound and looks and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
