Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of TEST PRESSING of this mid-period album by the Quiet Beatle. While many test pressings often have alternate or demo- versions of known, later released songs, and while it is possible that this particular test pressing contains demo or alternate versions of some of the tracks, please don’t take our word that it does:
PLEASE NOTE: THIS TEST PRESSING APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER; THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. TEST PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.

So it's 1982 and the Quiet Beatle sits down and says "You know what. To end my album contract with Warner, I'm gonna do a synth pop Jimmy Buffett album."
If that sentence doesn't send you running for the hills, you can actually find some stuff to love here.
This album comes with the notion that George and his buddies decided to rent a beach house and party, cutting an album in the process. If you look at it like that, it is something of a success. The whole album is nothing but silly fun, with goofy low bass backing vocals and synth blasts keeping the party alive. The opener "Wake Up My Love" is the the album in a nutshell, senseless fun. I also think it's probably the best song here, George sings with some good gusto and does his best to push the energy into you and for me it totally works. The same can be said for my 2nd favourite track (the only two that really warrant many repeated listens) "Dream Away" where George and his backups launch into a sing-along chorus that you can't help but jump into. What can I say, it's a lot of fun.
Yet it is also this reason that Gone Troppo falters, it's a little TOO lightweight and goofy and so much of it is too gimmicky and silly to take seriously even for party purposes. This holds true to tracks like "I Really Love You" or "Gone Troppo" which is a full on beach song where George tries to work in any quirky instrument he can a la Brian Wilson Pet Sounds but without the craftsmanship. They're not offensive or anything but it's just not memorable and pales in comparison to the exciting tracks done properly.
To be fair there are a couple of slower numbers too. "Greece" is a nice mellow break from the action and features some nice slide guitar work (as does "Mystical One") which you can pick out several times throughout the album. Then there's the extreme oddity "Circles" the 1968 White Album leftover that is decent but is just so out of place here it really should have been put on another album, maybe Dark Horse.
Gone Troppo is a good album if your looking for some silly fun, and that's all it wanted to be. It's certainly leagues ahead of Extra Texture, an album that tried to make you feel and think, both of which it failed spectacularly at while being a downer the whole time. It's all about what you expect from it. If you come in here just looking for a good time, you'll probably get it. If you want All Things Must Pass, you're bound to be disappointed. Simple as that.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in a hi-grade Warner Bros. inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
COVER : This reference pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in its original plain, generic, white cardboard cover (NOT GRADED SEPARATELY, BUT IN A NICE CONDITION OVERALL)
