Description
I am presenting here a very nice 78 record test pressing, made of vinyl and in tip top shape. The performance is by Gertrude Lawrence and is of the song Jenny from the 1941 musical Lady In the Dark, which Lawrence originally performed in for its initial broadway run. She was a successful and well respected British stage performer, dancer, singer and actress who was best known for her stage performances on Broadway and West End in London. She is better remembered now in the UK where she was originally from, but her legacy has been somewhat obscured due to the fact that she appeared in very few motion picture films and scarcely any that she did appear in feature her in starring roles. She also passed away relatively young at the age of 54 in 1952, just before televised theatricals would come to solidify in the consciousness of the public many great stage performers of the period. Interesting footnotes worth mentioning is that it was the original Broadway run of Lady In the Dark which launched Danny Kaye's trajectory to ultra stardom, and composer Johnny Green wrote the timeless 1930 classic Body and Soul, specifically for Gertrude Lawrence to perform. As for the disc itself, as stated previously it is in marvellous condition. Should play brilliantly once it gets a cleaning, as vinyl will have less surface noise than the commercially released shellac equivalent. These test pressings were made in very very small quantities.
