All eight of the singles Collins recorded under Meek's auspices. Idiosyncratic production and energetic, cheery vocals, but there's not much of substance for either Meek or the performer to work with. For Meek scholars, this collection is an admirable public service, and the very dated early-'60s pop and general in-your-face innocence (as well as the occasional sparkling Ritchie Blackmore guitar lick) make this fun, in a limited way. But if you're looking for some interesting wall-of-compression Joe Meek productions, you're much better advised to begin with a number of other artists, including the Honeycombs, Heinz, the Tornados, and Screaming Lord Sutch, for starters. Best tunes: the affecting ballad "Something I Got To Tell You" (covered in a superior version by The Honeycombs) and the brassy "Baby It Hurts."
