"The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" is so atypical and unique it's hard to know what to think of it at first. After several listens this has become not only our favorite Incredible String Band album, but one of our favorite albums ever by anyone. The first track "Koeeaddi There" is one of the most charming and unique songs to experience. It's all over the place, lyrically and structurally, but it all flows perfectly. It's fairy tale music for grown ups. "The Minotaur Song" is the funniest and most immediately enjoyable track here and shows that these guys definitely have a sense of humor about what they're doing (they show it a lot elsewhere but not as obviously as they do here). "Witches Hat" is a fun little song that would be one of the less memorable songs if it weren't for the classic lyric "next week a monkey is coming to stay" that just comes out of nowhere. The 13 minute epic "A Very Cellular Song" closes out side 1. This one is a suite comprised of several different sections that seem to be about mental and emotional evolution. It's a really amazing track. Side 2 has songs that are a little bit more "normal" structurally, but are still freaky and mind-blowing. The most normal song is "Mercy I Cry City" and the first thought was it might be a little too hokey and dated for this particular album, but it grows and the listener should come to really love it. It's the most charming anti-society rebellion song ever and real uplifting. The only other song with an obvious "message" is "Swift as the Wind". This one might make you tear up a few times, perhaps because many can identify with it so much. The masterpieces on side 2 are the modestly grandiose "Waltz of the New Moon" and the 7 1/2 minute sitar epic "Three is a Green Crown" which makes the 'Beatles' "Within You Without You" sound like The Monkees.
There's so much to love about this album both in quality of songs, and in the mood and attitude. This album makes a great "soundtrack to life" perhaps because it's so full of contradictions much like life itself. It's mystical and fairy tale esque, yet earthy and realistic. It's edgy and experimental yet whimsical and heartfelt. It's classical and pure yet free and wild.
Guess you could call this a album a "deconstruction" as some people have, but that sort of sells the album short. There are elements of many different types of folk, classical, and exotic Indian music on here, but this isn't done merely to be clever and fun (and it would be fine if it was, love 'Ween' for example), but really it's to create a unique sound, vision and vibe that's never really been done before or since.
"The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" may well be one of the most unique and captivating albums to experience...
