Brief Info: The first part of the ‘Radio Gnome’ trilogy, the others were ‘Angel’s Egg’ and ‘You’. Brilliant spaced-out, jazz-tinged, prog-rock, and including their strongest ever line-up that included guitarist Steve Hillage. Overall, this is a very fine copy, like most albums within this genre, it has some very quiet passages, so the odd gentle sporadic tick here-and-there is near impossible to avoid totally. A small mark at the very end of the album has three or four as the sound almost ends. But the vast majority of this early copy plays impressively and will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A small dink and rub to the top right corner tip, little else to fault. Any creasing little, fine and light near the spine edge, any marks or blemishes few and faint. This retains deep unfaded colour and freshness, a very attractive front for a challenging cover.

Cover Back: Practically the same again, even better if anything, the lack of ring wear is always a major plus on covers like this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Clean and impressive with barely anything to fault.

Top Edges: Both thin and straight, flush and parallel with barely any rubbing. Just a little to the back right corner tip area.

Bottom Edges: Similar again but with a little patchy quite light rubbing on the front edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is tucked and folded giving a neater finish, this has barely any wear at all. The back entrance edge is clean, mostly sharp with little wear, the inside one is immaculate. A little thickening to the outer one which is a little longer in manufacture, thus the inner one is naturally protected. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, with no compression and folded square, so all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. An very fine natural hairline from opening is present – and has been on just all copies I have seen over time – that apart, little else to fault bar one tiny chip. So the graphic and text is all present, just the merest hint of ageing seen on the paler areas.

Corners: A small dink and rub to the top right corner tip, any other rubs are tiny and light with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A challenging and fast becoming scarce early Virgin cover, this has fared well and remains attractive as seen. It should please many collectors.

Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner. One edge a little thinned, this look like a minor manufacture issue. That apart, little else to fault bar very gentle hint of paper age discolouration.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with impressive shine and fairly solidly pressed. Any surface marks are ultra fine and faint as seen under my bright grading lamp. A tiny mark near the very end emits three or four gentle clicks almost as the album ends. The vinyl is pure with no dulling or mottle, thus sound quality is mainly superb throughout, lacking the irritating crackle many, especially later copies seem to have, but the odd other sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid on an album with some very quiet areas. Visually a lovely early record to match the impressive cover, it will again please many collectors, but just short for absolute perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This first black and white Virgin label copy plays even above it’s impressive visual grading for most of its entirety – I have already mentioned the tiny mark at the very end of the side two. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound registered little, and this is an album with some very quiet passages, the odd one-off tick nigh-on impossible to avoid for the entire duration, but this has very few at all – the end blemish again noted. Will any example of this nearly 43-year-old album ever play truly silent via vinyl? – well it would be a very tough ask to say the least – this copy gives a strong account of itself. The complex groove patterns indicate many dark and lighter areas that indicate higher and very quiet volume and content, but no tracking issues* or actual inherent pressing noises. These are always hard to find devoid of scratches and damage, this has avoided anything like that and most was a pleasure to play-grade. It could prove difficult to match or improve significantly – not perfect – but setting a very fine standard. Not for the perfectionist who only wants pristine at any cost, but this should please many fans and collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
