Milwaukee's Penny Goodwin clung to live shows for most of her career, then finally gave over to tape under the pressure of demand. Portrait Of A Gemini is the sole result: out in 1974, it came years after her choraling debuts as a church singer with Al Jarreau, thereafter descending to Midwest clubs and on to Vegas rooms, learning her phrasing the hard way: before the scrupulous eye and ear of the audience(s), each with different intentions. Goodwin's voice is a wafting, whispery, but firm stream, cutting through string sections, ticking drum brushes, and various other instrumental pressures; Marvin Gaye and Gil Scott-Heron are rendered, and rended through, with the ease of a kitchen cleaver; then a movement into originals written with manager Sy Lefco stakes her own identity. The sessions are dressed with strings by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and guitar work from Phil Upchurch, lending Goodwin a quiet authority despite an otherwise blunted recording career.
