In the beginning of the 90s, the Dutch band GOREFEST were considered the death metal bastion of our neighboring country, which alongside bands like PESTILENCE & SINISTER was the spearhead of netherland Death Metal. With the 4th full lenght album ''Soul Survivor'' from year 1996 the quartet slowly said goodbye to the sound of the early days & turned increasingly to genre-alien sounds. PESTILENCE became more and more jazzy-spacey sound patterns, while in the case of GOREFEST the musical preference of guitarist Boudewijn Bonebakker flowed more into the sound. So it can be explained that gradually more hard rock and blues influences of the 70s came. ''Soul Survivor'' shows with its 10 tracks the most excesses form of all GOREFEST albums in this respect. The spirit of the early days was here almost exclusively recognizable just in their bloodthirsty band name. Musically its given Death and 'Roll' are equally represented on ''Soul Survivor'', add with classical melodic, blues scaled guitar solos, as well as mellotron, Hammond organ and piano inserts. The characteristic, guttural and bass-heavy vocals of frontman Jan-Chris de Koeijer, who worked out correct vocal lines for this album for the first time, are supported by rhythmically accentuated, lowered tuned guitar walls and form an expressive foundation, on which the already mentioned rocking lead guitars, perfect fit unfold. GOREFEST have build itself a monument with this work. Perhaps not for all Death Metal disciples from the past, but musical claim and instrumental skills have formed a real hammer recording here. The 2019's re-edition on limited vinyl comes in blue wax with white/black splatters in gatefold cover.
