Beb Guérin, Nelson Serra de Castro, Fernando Martins, Trombone, Arranged By – Grachan Moncur III
Moncur here explores two traditional Brazilian numbers, as well as two of his own originals. The title track features the vocals of pianist Fernando Martins, though they are used sparingly and only to state the theme. From there, it seems to drop its Brazilian allegiances altogether in favor of an open post-bop feel. In this sense, fans of the looser quartet dates by Wayne Shorter -- Adam's Apple, for instance -- should find these Coltrane-inspired performances quite enjoyable. One might also compare this material to that performed by Moncur's band at the Black Arts Repertory Theatre School benefit in March of 1965. Those pieces, later released on the Impulse collections, The Dedication Series, Vol. 8: The New Breed and The New Wave in Jazz, also featured Moncur as the only horn player, and, perhaps for this reason, there seems to be less of an emphasis on ensemble composition and more of a loose, jam session feel. As a result, even the two Moncur originals exhibit little of the dark and foreboding nature one has come to expect from others like "New Africa," "Ghost Town," "Love and Hate," and "Frankenstein" -- the last of which he quotes during the solo of this session's closer. All in all this is a perfectly enjoyable set.
