GRAM PARSONS HONKY TONK SESSIONS Well I guess you've all been waiting for this one to come up. This was one of the most treasured items in my collection. Originally found deep in the pages of Record Collector in an advert placed by Pete Flanagan in March 1989. Pete had an amazing shop in Clapham called Zippo Music. He also ran a couple of record lables, Zippo Records which released on license great albums from the 80's American Paisley Underground bands like The Long Ryders, Green On Red & Giant Sand. His other lable was Heartland Records which was his outlet for Texas artists, Townes Van Zandt was his most famous artist on this lable. These days Pete is just happy to do a few record fairs after selling up and moving out to the west country to live. Anyway, back to this acetate. Ten of the eleven songs here have been released many times on various albums. These are all early pre-mix versions with no harmonies or overdubs, just basic instruments and Gram's vocals. The eleventh track is an alternative instrumental version of "Lodi". Being pre-mix, Gram's vocal grunts, yelps and ad-libs are also heard. Chris Hillman was right when he mentioned that these tracks were just rehearsals and never meant for public consumption. The underlined below will sum up what you hear. You can read more about these sessions in Ben Fong-Torres' book "Hickory Wind" in chapter 22, page 142 of which I'll quote just a little bit of. "The entire session was recorded quick and dirty - Grams vocals and the bands instrumentals were recorded simultaneously - to give it a live feeling. In fact Chris Hillman was certain that the Burritos were only rehearsing the songs. But before Jim Dickson could add harmonies and additional instrumentals, the Burritos were back on the road". This acetate has been played quite a few times (only once by me and taped onto metal cassette), but has NO SKIPS OR JUMPS AND NO FLAKING TO THE WAX. There is a reason why i have opened a new account with eBay to sell rather than use my existing account. I have in the last year or so returned to my Christian belief. I want to follow what is scriptual in disposing of what, quite honestly, has been a bit of a millstone around my neck. One day i looked around at all the many thousand items that filled two rooms and came to a dawning realisation that i had no idea what 90% of all this stuff was. I mean, i could go and buy something, play it once, log it, and that was the last i ever saw of it. So, this has handed me a golden opportunity to turn around this situation into something positive. I usually find something to say about what i am selling along with a track listing for albums. I hope that my passion and love for these items shines through occasionally amongst my rambling. So why would i want to just give them away. Simple, my love for Jesus as my redeemer is even greater. Matthew chapter 19 verses 16-21 gives my explanation for giving the lot to the Haiti Hospital Appeal. So keep watching as there are loads of serious stuff to come ( including a couple of hundred Westwood one type radio shows ).
