Formed in the early 70’s in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and with roots in 60’s garage music GRANICUS somehow managed to score a deal with RCA in the states. Their first and only album was originally released in 1973 to an apathetic public. The truth of the matter is that despite its quasi Zep pretensions, Granicus was just too wild a beast for the American public. Vocalist Woody Leffel possess a voice so high in register that he makes David Surkamp sound like Lemmy! Whilst the lyrics are the typical early metal themes of dysfunction, Vietnam and sex the musicianship is a metal delight. Lilting passages mutate into orgies of unabashed riffing and neo psychedelic guitar soloing. All the while Leffel whispers, wails and screams like Robert Plant only wished he could.
