THE GRATEFUL DEAD – Anthem Of The Sun ORIG Warner Bros. LP / WS 1749 (UK, Stereo, 1968)
Happy to present a very rare UK original of the Dead’s 2nd LP – an album full of wonder and trickery. I can bring this copy to you in a lovely, well-preserved state showing it has been looked after with only occasional play. All original components are in place here – the heavy vinyl with the bright 1960s orange labels, the front-laminated, flipback sleeve and the WB advertising inner.
The front-laminated tri-flipback sleeve was made in the UK by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and is a very solid example showing the following (small) imperfections: an inch long nick to the top edge, looks like a split but isn’t; a few light and small ‘thumb’ creases to the front; some small creases to the spine edge and the bottom edge; slight laminate shrinkage to the opening edge; a little corner wear (not much at all); a couple of small staining spots to the white rear panel and some slight rubbing/toning to the same (rear). These are all small blemishes in keeping with the record’s age and if you can accept the small edge nick, you’ll agree with me in grading this a TRUE VG+ (Very Good Plus) – still fresh, still pleasing and generally well-looked after. Spine is perfect with all text readable. No writing.
The deep orange 1960s Warner Bros. labels are fine with no writing, stickers or residue. They do, however, show some spindle trails – light on Side 1 more moderate on Side 2. Still an impressive set of 1968 labels!
The sharp, medium to heavy weight vinyl grades visually at a true VG+ (Very Good Plus). That means NO heavy markings! There are a few fine scuffs, some ‘bag rash’ and a handful of hairlines but this record is far from being beat up. When I grade VG+ IT MEANS THE RECORD SHOWS LIGHT AND FINE MARKS WHICH ARE NOT UGLY or INTRUSIVE AND HAVE NO EFFECT AT ALL ON THE AUDIO. There are no scratches, scrapes, embedded dirt or craters on the disc’s surface. The record plays brilliantly throughout – so no snap, pops, clicks, hiss, distortion or loss of clarity. Overall, a way above average copy of this rare Dead original UK press.
Supplied with its original inner (creases and a bottom split), so I will house the record in a new inner. Nice original UK 1960s Grateful Dead.
