This great little 45 just oozes hipness, coolness and quality.
This is a very scarce, limited distribution, Promotional Only 7" single from 1973 by legendary rock band Grateful Dead. This is one of the tougher Grateful Dead Promo 45s to find, especially in this great condition.
I got this cool Grateful Dead Promo 45 many years ago, in the early 70s, when it was 'new', from a friend who worked for a record distributer. It was new stock back then, played once or twice, then put away in my 45 vinyl collection. It's been hanging out there for almost 50 years, and it needs a new home.
This 45 has the great Black and White custom label featuring the 2 field crows and is clearly marked 'Promotional'
This single, unlike the Stock single, contains 2 versions of 'Eyes', Mono and Stereo, It was meant for radio Station promotion and reviewers at the time. It didn' get much promotion at the time and is hard  to find.
The white labels on these 45s were notorious for attracting dirt, scuffs and also invited people to put their names or marks on them. The labels on this 45 are bright, white and clean. They look great!
~~~~~ Like many of the Dead's songs, “Eyes of the World” is a Robert Hunter lyric set to music by Jerry Garcia. In interviews, Jerry has said that he had the lyrics sitting around for a long time and spent considerable effort trying to find the right style of music to set Hunter's complex lyrics to. I think he nailed it.
'Eyes' was originally released on the Dead's album "Wake of the Flood" which was released in October of 1973. It was the first album to appear on the Dead's own independent record label, the first album without Pigpen, the first with keyboardist Keith Godchaux, and the first studio album they did in quite some time.
This was one of two singles released from 'Wake.' Both the album and the singles had very cool custom labels. The 2 'official' singles were:
"Let Me Sing Your Blues Away b/w "Here Comes Sunshine" "Eyes of the World" b/w "Weather Report Part I"
There are many copies of those 2 stock singles available, but this Promo only, Mono/Stereo 45 is becoming scarce and tough to find, especially in pristine condition.
The song wasn't very well received at the time and the single didn't sell well, but over time, 'Eyes' has become a classic and favorite of many Deadheads.
When it was released, Rolling Stone Magazine called it "dull-witted, inbred, blissed-out hippy-dippyness." Many great performances since, and many Deadheads, have proved them wrong.
'Eyes' was first played at the Roscoe Maples Pavilion at Stanford University in Palo Alto on February 9, 1973 and was often played following 'Truckin' or played coming out of a long jam during performances of that period. In those days, it was usually linked with 'China Doll' in concert.
By the summer of 1977, 'Eyes' was usually paired up coming out of 'Estimated Prophet'. 'Eyes' was always a great, upbeat song in concert and those opening chords by Jerry were instantly recognizable, telling you what you were about to experience. I've seen the band play 'Estimated--Eyes' many many times over the years.
~~~~~ This record is in terrific condition. Clean, no obvious flaws or damage. Both the vinyl and labels look great. The vinyl looks terrific on both sides. Looks unplayed.
The condition is fantastic and it still looks new. One owner, minimal plays and minimal handling. One of the best copies I've ever seen.
See the enclosed photos for the best sense of condition.

~~~~ I’m recently retired and downsizing and letting go some gems and rarities from nearly 45 years of vinyl record collecting. Check out the many other fantastic 45s and 33s coming soon to my page!
All 45s come in generic stock white paper sleeves and simple poly-bags, unless otherwise pictured or mentioned. I do try to match up proper, appropriate generic company sleeves with my 45’s and I’ll gladly include them if I have them. This Promo single originally came in a plain white sleeve. The cool label art spoke for itself.
All records have been carefully evaluated and graded by me. I visually inspect all records under bright light, personally clean them and then play them on a modern high-end turntable to get a true picture of condition. Please look at all the high-resolution pictures I added. They are all my own and are of the actual record being sold. The pictures are part of the description and can show small details, label variations, and condition better than I can put into words.
I’ve been told by other vinyl collecting friends that I under-grade the condition of my records. I see no harm in that. If that VG+ record comes and it’s nicer that you thought, great! We’ve all been burned by that EX- record purchase only to get it and it looks like it was cleaned with sandpaper and played with a rusty nail. My goal is to avoid that ever happening to me or you ever again. My grading is fair and honest and I will ALWAYS refund you for anything you’re not happy with. I have had over 3,200 happy and satisfied EBay customers over the years, with 100% positive feedback, and I have been buying/selling on EBay for well over 20 years, so please bid with confidence!
I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collecting vinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection.
As you well know, packing and shipping rare records requires special care and attention, therefore, shipping cost within the lower 48 states is $4.50 on this item. If you would like insurance, or anything faster than Media/Economy Mail, please let me know and I can arrange it for you. I’ll work with you to make sure you’re happy!
I will gladly combine multiple records, or other items on my page, and make the shipping much less for you. I don’t inflate the shipping costs; they are what they are. I strive to keep them as low as possible. See my feedback for comments on my packing and shipping.
All items are packaged with sturdy cardboard mailers and appropriate padding. I take pride in my packaging and shipping and package all my records as if I were sending them to myself. I refuse to use cheap flimsy packaging material when sending my vinyl. I treat them as if they were my own and mail them the same way.
All orders are processed and shipped within 2 business days of receipt. We package and ship our vinyl records with the greatest care, using proper packaging to ensure that your rare and collectible vinyl records arrive in pristine condition.
Payments can be made by any of the multiple options that Ebay offers.
I will be happy to exchange feedback with anyone I complete a transaction with. If you would like to get feedback, I ask that you let me know we've completed the transaction by leaving feedback for me after you receive your item, at which time I will do the same for you!
