Rare unofficial triple Grateful Dead LP, A Farewell to Winterland, featuring the very last concert ever at the famous Winterland in San Francisco, on Dec. 31, 1978. This is the REAL ORIGINAL and infamous banned LP that was actually suppressed by the Dead organization, who were usually pretty lenient about bootleg LPs. But the organization was up in arms about this release because the photo shows Garcia holding a brandy glass---which has a bump of cocaine on the base. They used to smoke coke off of the glass this way, and Garcia was furious that this photo was being distributed on this LP cover, so they went out and actively rounded up as many copies as they could and destroyed them. Consequently these records are quite rare today, though there was a second pressing that was done after the first ones were rounded up. The SECOND pressing is the one you see all the time, on the Slipped Disk label, supposedly made in England to avoid being tracked down by the Dead. The rare first pressings all have mix-matched labels that say nothing about the Dead, NOT the black Slipped-disc labels with the skeleton. This one is a true first pressing, a real rarity.
This concert is famous as being the first time the Dead played Dark Star since 1974, which was a hugely momentous occasion, and this original mix and mastering (taken from the radio broadcast at the time) sounds way better than the horrendous digital version that is available now. Well worth having for the music as well as the collectibility. An all-time classic Dead show, and a great sounding recording.
The LPs are in perfect shape. The cover has a little edgewear, some minor scuffs, and some minor ringwear from the discs. Still it is about VG to VG+. Not bad at all. Rare in any condition.
