Description
This is a fine original U.S. pressing copy of the first of two 1968 archival LPs of live material by original Bay Area group the Great Society, recorded at San Francisco's Matrix club in 1965-66. As the record's jacket makes clear, the group were known for launching the career of future Jefferson Airplane/Starship vocalist Grace Slick. Indeed, as the title of the second archival release, Collector’s Item, suggests, these LPs were put out in no small part to cash in on the Airplane's popularity. Be that as it may, the LPs are not without their own intrinsic interest. The group put out only one release during their brief existence, the single "Someone to Love," penned by guitarist Darby Slick (Grace's brother-in-law). Retitled "Somebody to Love," it soon after became one of the Airplane's signature songs. This LP features versions of that song and the Grace-penned "White Rabbit" (the latter extended to over six minutes), along with a fine take on the contemporary folk song "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," a cover of Bob Dylan's "Outlaw Blues," and several other originals. The jacket has a small mark in pen on the front cover, creasing and light tearing in one corner, light wear in the other corners and along the seams, and light staining on the back cover slick (EX). The disc has some light dinging and scraping, and plays with some light surface noise (EX). The record comes with the original label inner sleeve.
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
If you'd like to order multiple items, I'll happily combine them so that you won't have to pay multiple shipping charges.
