Marcia Griffiths' 1974 debut marked a turning point in Jamaican popular music, bridging the polish of American soul with the rhythmic discipline of reggae. This new reissue restores that duality in full, pairing the original album with 14 bonus tracks drawn from her late-60s and early-70s sessions with producer Lloyd Charmers. The remaster sharpens everything: guitars clipped tight around the groove, horns glowing with new air, and Griffiths' voice - calm and commanding but never showy - holding it together. 'Here I Am Baby (Come & Take Me)' and 'Everything I Own' still sound pristine, her phrasing tracing each line with quiet precision. The rarities tell a deeper story. 'Melody Life' and 'Mark My Word' reveal her early composure, already balancing vulnerability and poise whilst 'The First Cut Is the Deepest' and Charmers' alternate 'Play Me' show how naturally she moved between Jamaican pop and transatlantic soul. Taken as a whole, the record charts the evolution of a singer who helped define lovers rock before the term existed.
