TO MANY, including myself, Tony McPhee is one if the greatest overlooked guitar talents of his generation. Appearing during the blues rock boom of the sixties and inspite his ability Tony's talent was inevitably burried alongside the impact of Hendrix, Green, Lee, Clapton, Beck and Page. Amongst the cognescenti however his presence was not only rock solid but also hugely influential. 

By 1970 the Groundhogs had largely outgrown their blues rock origins and had intigrated the burgeoning psychedelic and progressive sounds coming from as far afield as New York and San Francisco. 'Thank Christ For The Bomb' signalled a huge shift in direction allowing McPhee to utilise new musical ideas and compose a conceptual album. It also showcased a side of his playing that had not been fully developed prior to this work - a shift from standard blues soloing to wild improvised freak outs. Most of side one is largely constructed of several key movements peaking with the explosive finale located in the title track itself.

Over on side two the mayhem continues, particularly in  'Garden' with it's embattled heavy riff and fractious guitar soloing, yet the best is saved for last as 'Eccentric Man' strains beneath weighty core riffing whilst McPhee does his best to out-dazzle all competition with a solo that appears to be channelled the fingers of Jimi Hendrix. It really is that good.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Liberty, UK, 1970 - Original Blue label

Vinyl: Nice clean condition. Displays spindle marks and some signs of wear - mainly cosmetic surface scuffs from sliding in and out of the inner sleeve. Playback is superb. Grades as a nice Ex.

Cover: Only light signs of any use. A very difficult textured gatefold cover to find in clean unmarked shape. This one is strong - only minimal storage wear. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no creases, no rubbing and just the faintest of ring and storage wear to bottom of rear panel. The spine is stiff, straight with just a hint of wear. Grades as a nice clean Ex
