The Guess Who were a Canadian rock band who achieved international success with the 1970 hit singles “No Time” and “American Woman”.

Formed in Winnipeg in 1960, they had a Canadian No.1 in 1965 with “Shakin’ All Over” while still called Chad Allan & the Expressions. But the records were credited to “Guess Who?”, as a marketing gimmick designed to get the public guessing that the song might be a secret side-project by a big-name star. By the time their real identity was revealed, they were so well known as “Guess Who?” that they were forced to take it on as their real name.

In 1968 they changed the name to “The Guess Who” (without a question mark), and they enjoyed a US Top 10 hit the following year with “These Eyes”. Their biggest success came with the 1970 release of American Woman: the title track was the first Canadian song to top the US charts, and it topped the Canadian chart and made an impression in the UK too. “No Time” also went to No.1 in Canada, and made the US Top 5.

Guitarist and songwriter Randy Bachman then left to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and the band struggled to replicate their earlier success, though they still had several minor hits. “Clap for the Wolfman” (1974) was a Top 10 hit on both sides of the border, but the band broke up the following year.

AMERICAN WOMAN - NUMBERED OUT OF PRINT  EDITION -  Despite a previous Top 40 hit “These Eyes” from Wheat-field Soul, success was evasive south of the Canadian border for The Guess Who. American Woman ignited U.S. interest in the then 7-year old rock band from Winnipeg. The certified Gold Record contains three Top 40 singles (“No Time”, “No Sugar Tonight” and the ubiquitous title track). It successfully bridged the gap between 60’s poprock and 70’s stadium rock.

The Guess Who’s next album Share the Land contained the hit title track, a rallying cry against corporate greed and warmongering, though in a less affronting manner than “American Woman.” The band officially broke up in 1975, but continues in various guises today.

Track Listings - Artificial Paradise, originally released in 1973 RCA LSP-4830, was The Guess Who's most band-oriented effort. New recruits Don McDougall (guitar, vocals) and Bill Wallace (bass, vocals) contribued strong original material, as did returning guitarist Kurt Winter. Bandleader Burton Cummings brought several gems to the table, including Orly, The Watcher, and one of his state of the band addresses: Those Show Biz Shoes. Although not a major commercial success upon release, Artificial Paradise has become a firm audience favorite and is the most requested title by fans of Iconoclassic's Guess Who reissue series.  Artificial Paradise is also acclaimed for its unique sweepstakes style packaging, which is reproduced for this reissue.

The Way They Were - 1976 RCA RECORDS APL1-1778

Track Listings - Real fans of The Guess Who knew about the existance of this material years before it finally surfaced in the summer of 1976. But, issued to fulfill a contactual obligation, it died quickly during the early days of disco. Its raw, unfinished demo sound seemed cheap compared to the polished over-productions of disco and classic rock of the times. Being a fan, I bought it and listened to it occasionally over the ensuing decades. As the years wore on it gradually became one of my favorites. With some polishing up of the production, and the addition of some more tracks, it would have been a worthy successor to "American Woman." In fact, I now prefer it to "Share the Land." Some of the songs in this more-than-an-EP, but-less-than-an-LP's worth of material had showed up before 1976. "Miss Frizzy" appeared in 1973 on "#10" (though this version is better), "Take the Long Way Home" was an instrumental on Randy's solo album "Axe" (though again the vocal version here is much better), and "Running Down the Street" appeared as the B-side of "Hand Me Down World." With a more polished arrangement and better lyrics, "Silver Bird" would have been a great follow-up single to "American Woman." It was actually released as a single in 1976, but was virtually ingnored by radio. The lyrics are the same kind of "I've been on the road too long" stuff that was done much better on the "Road Food " album. "Palmayra" is a great rocker that would have made a good 2nd single of the album. The real diamond in the rough here is "The Answer." 3 decades later it stands out as one of the RCA-era band's best songs. With the greater appreciation for stripped-down/minimalist production values that marked much '90's rock, this album sounds even more contemporary than some of the band's more polished and famous productions

GUESS WHO 10 - #10, originally released in 1973 ON THIS RCA RECORDS APD1-0130, represented The Guess Who's 10th album with lead singer/pianist Burton Cummings at the helm. Appropriately, #10 was more focused on Cummings' voice and songs than the Guess Who albums that immediately preceded it. While this caused some dissention in the band, the music by no means suffered. #10 is among The Guess Who's more underrated albums, but includes a typically strong and diverse set of songs, touching on country-rock ("Lie Down," a revisit of Bachman-Cummings' "Miss Frizzy"), prog ("Musicione") and incisive, orchestrated balladry the hit single "Glamour Boy,"
