Hank Garland was not the first guitarist from the country and western scene to discover jazz as a new playground. Mundell Lowe (who still knows him today?) And Tal Farlow (whose Verve recordings have become classics) were two who became known to jazz fans.
Garland's role model Charlie Christian was the inspiration when he was invited by Columbia for a super session, and the LP "Jazz Winds From A New Direction" became a real hit. With Joe Morello, the drummer for the tricky, odd meters and Joe Benjamin, trained by Gerry Mulligan to conjure up harmoniously even without piano, and Gary Burton, a newcomer (he was 17 at the time!) On the vibraphone who nobody knew at the time, they were six tracks on a musical, stylistic and technical recording revelation.
Unfortunately, it was to be the only jazz session because, tragically, Hank Garland was unable to regain his old championship after a car accident. Jazz fans should grab it when they see this LP in the store, remastered. It was an enrichment for the musical horizon for the musicians during the recording and remains so for the listeners today.
