This handsome gatefold LP from Philips (L 02.243 L, Dutch pressing, Tresors Classiques white/red label, mono) features Maurice Gendron in superb renditions of Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 and Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme Op. 33, with the latter's Pezzo capriccioso for Cello and Orchestra Op. 62 making a delightful encore.

In all three works, Gendron plays his own cadenzas. He is accompanied throughout in sterling fashion by a young Christoph von Dohnányi and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, all in superb sound.

These recordings were made in the warm acoustics of the Grosser Saal, the Musikverein, Vienna, in February 1962.

The composer Ned Rorem said of Gendron: "He was the most gifted, the most difficult, the most spiritual human being I ever met." He was certainly one of the last century's great cellists and these remarkable concertante performances are richly communicative.

The left interior panel of the gatefold jacket carries superb liner notes by Henry-Jacques, provided in French only. The right interior panel contains full-color reproductions of albums from other titles in this series. The memorable cover photo of Gendron was taken by Arjé Plas.

PLEASE NOTE:

Even with minimal packaging, this particular issue will weigh over 500 g. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $22 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $25 USD.

Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

Anyway, all this to say that those who feel the price is high need to take the cost of shipping into account. If you have any questions or doubts, feel free to write and I will be happy to help. Thank you.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is light edgewear, shelfwear, and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains extremely solid and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

PLEASE NOTE:
This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve. The images I've provided are of the actual item you are potentially bidding on - these are not stock images or images I've taken from other sites. Bid with confidence!
