Genesis - Nursery Cryme

(Charisma CAS 1052 1971 UK LP)

Original pink scroll label copy of Genesis’ classic third album which is surprisingly hard to find in nice shape. A real classic album which belongs in any classic or progressive rock collection, you all known the music so straight on to the condition…..

Tracks:

The Musical Box

For Absent Friends

The Return of The Giant Hogweed

Seven Stones

Harold The Barrel

Harlequin

The Fountain Of Salmacis

Condition: Sleeve EX / Record VG+

Sleeve:

Thick textured card gatefold sleeve manufactured by E J Day.

The front sleeve is just fine, it’s extremely clean with no writing, no creases and no tears anywhere. The texture is still deep and clearly defined. A really nice example. One thing though, is it just me that is terrified by the thought of one day meeting that girl with the croquet mallet? The expression on her face as she’s about to wallop someone’s head through a hoop scares the hell outa me!

Turning to the more sedate but equally scary design on the rear. This is in equally fine condition, very clean with no flaws to speak of, no tears, no writing no creasing, again the texture is still deep and well defined.

Inside the gatefold is just about perfect, no wear, no writing, no tears, extremely clean, as good as you could hope for.

The spine is square and wide, very clean but very slightly worn at the bottom corner, all of the writing however is still clearly readable.

The top seam has some moderate wear.

The bottom seam also has some moderate wear.

Record:

The record itself is in decent condition without being mint. I’ve always found Charisma albums to be of varying quality sound wise so you can’t always judge them visually, even records which you’d assume to be from the same pressing can be very different sounding beasts, one can be perfect but the next can be very noisy, odd!

Anyway, visually this one has some light surface marks, nothing serious just some light hairline marks which don’t make any audible contributions. When held under a harsh lamp these marks obviously look more serious but are still nothing to worry about as they are still inaudible. The disc is extremely clean and any dust or dirt which was present has been removed using a professional Moth record cleaning machine, it‘s completly flat and sits on a turntable truly without any warping.

The two labels are in pretty much perfect condition. Both are very clean with no writing, no tears, no stickers and no discernible spindle wear. The matrix numbers stamped into the run off grooves are CAS 1052 A-1 and B-2U.

When played the record sounds pretty good but not perfect. There are some light crackles on the run in grooves on both sides, these are every light and disappear before the music appears, these could be pressing sounds or caused by the light hairline marks either way they do not spoil the actual music. The same light background noise is also present at times between tracks, not every track though, only occasionally. The music itself sounds great at high volume, typical early Genesis moving instantly from light delicate sounds to the most intense progressive of rock sounds this needs a good sounding record to reproduce the dynamic changes cleanly and despite those light marks this one does that, the light crackles aside no unwanted surface noise was noticed when I played this record.

Wouldn’t normally bother ebaying a record with the marks this one has but while finding a copy of this LP is not difficult, they will be loads of later pressings available in the cheap box at your local record store (and you should support your local independent record store!), finding an original pink label copy though is much more difficult, this album did not sell well until several years after it’s release and original copies are highly sought after, so while this copy is not perfect it will do admirably until that perfect copy comes along.
