Description

George Harrison ‘All Things Must Pass" Full LP Acetate Set Once Phil Spector’s Beatles

Three 2 Sided 12”Disks No Labels

This is part of a selection of Apple LP acetates from the collection of a Director of Promotions for Apple Records from as early as 1970. Most of the acetates in this collection had standard designated acetate labels but there are some from even earlier in the audio review stage of record production that have no labels at all. These unlabled reference acetates have to be listened to on a record player in order to determine what they are.

This set of three acetates for George Harrison iconic 1970 “All Things Must Pass” is one of those unlabeled reference acetates.

Full album Apple acetates are rare in the extreme.

This set of unlabled acetates were Phil Spector’s personal work acetates. Judging from the state of the mixes, I would say that this acetate was used for making decisions about the final mixes of the songs on the album. All of the songs on this set of acetates are in the same order as they appeared on the original 1970 LP release. I listened to most of the songs on the album together with a friend who grew up listening to the album all the time. My friend thinks that all of the takes of the songs are the same but some of the songs are at “different levels” I think that some of the mixes on some of the songs are definately different from the final 1970 album release.

The Apple Records employee who owned this acetate set worked with Phil Spector on a regular basis. I was told by this employee that Phil Spector frequently discarded record production materials, recording equipment and records once he no longer needed those items.  This acetate set came from the same collection of records and acetates as the A&M Studio Label Acetates that I sold last month on Ebay that were used in producing the  “The Concert for Bangladesh”three record box on Apple Records featuring George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr and Leon Russell.

These acetates were definately used and the overall condition of the set seems to be Strong VG to VG+ The detailed condition breakdown is as follows:

Side 1 - Strong VG

Side 2 - Strong VG (numerous small marks nothing deep)

Side 3 - VG+

Side 4 - Strong VG

Side 5 - VG+

Side 6 - NM

No labels on any of the three disks. I am including a photo of one of the blank label areas to give an idea of what they look like along with a list of all the songs.

George Harrison “All Things Must Pass”is considered to be one of the best, if not the best of the solo Beatles LPs. It was not until I had to really listen to both the acetates and the stock Apple LP that I realized how good this album is. I am including a list of the songs on the acetates but the main hits are “My Ssweet Lord””Isnt It A Pity?””What Is Life”and “All Things Must Pass”

Check my other and future listings for more rare Philles and Apple Records records, acetates and awards. This set of acetates will come with a Letter of Authenticity signed by myself. My name is Christopher Chatman and I have been writing and dealing in acetates and extremely rare music items since 1977. I have included an article in the photos that I wrote in the 1990s called "What is an acetate and why do they cost so much money? The article was published in the 1990 book "Goldmine's Rock N' Roll 45 rpm Record Price Guide"
