Ever fancied owning the 1st ever retail LP pressing on Apple Records in the UK? Well, they exist... I would imagine not many of them would have survived into 2021 though. [Matrix A1/B2] - 1st cut. In the deadwax are the original catalogue numbers "STAP1 & 2" - but they are redacted [crossed out]. As anyone who is an Apple aficionado will know the 1st release on Apple records in the UK from 1968 was George's 'Wonderwall Music'. Hence the catalogue number - APCOR1 [clever - ha!]. These copies at 1st issue were pressed by EMI Middlesex - nice heavy sixties quality. But many thousands of copies will have been produced in the summer of '68 - to coincide with an APPLE Records opening ceremony. When it came down to it the WM release was delayed a wee bit and would actually only hit the shelves on 1st Nov 1968 - just three weeks before the WHITE ALBUM would first make its debut. So, this is a 1st press of WM from summer 68 - and the first LP title ever released on Apple Records - but how can we identify it as one of the 1st LP records ever pressed for Apple? Well, EMI used their Gramophone coding sequence for all pressings, including this one. Very 1st copies of WM will be from the first mother "1" and the first stamper employed will be "G". You will note this copy utilises that very 1st stamper "1G" - both sides. Meaning it is from the first batch ever pressed [probably just a few hundred copies - of which very few will now be in existence]. So this LP should be of interest to a collector of Harrison's music, and perhaps someone with a particular interest in Apple records. Someone who appreciates first and foremost the historical significance of the 1G - "1st stamper" on WM. It comes housed in an original 'stereo' 1st issue thick card cover with inverted image on the rear. The inversion is no printing mistake - this was how the artwork was envisaged. We also have the original black/white Apple insert with track listing credits and the Apple Savile Row address.
Vinyl (Vg/Vg+) In very nice condition despite a moderate level of use. Anyone who is averse to surface marking should perhaps seek a cleaner looking copy. This copy does exhibit quite a bit of low-level marking - and will not be to everyone's taste. Like I mention above - if you get/understand the historical context...this should be of less concern to you. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a varying level of playback between VERYGOOD and VERYGOOD+. Again, anyone who is looking for a nice clean 1st copy is probably not going to be satisfied with this example - there is a bit of background exhibiting here and there throughout. But it, none the less, represents a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable rendition. At times it plays real sweet - but not exclusively though. In some of the very fussy tracks [e.g. 2 and 3 on side 2, & 3 and 1 on side 1] - expect a bit of background exhibiting. Nothing terrible - but it most certainly will be audible to the listener in places. Overall a very nice playing original copy. I see the value, primarily, in the historical significance of the copy first and foremost. But it still makes for a very nice playing 1st copy - all the same.
Cover (Vg+) Can be found in quite a varying level of condition. Front and back are very nice and flat with relatively little sign of ageing - just a couple of thumbnail creases on the front toward the opening. Please note there is a small stain down in the bottom left corner on the front. The rear is looking really nice - no faults. Edge wear is minor for this title and the openings are still nice and firm. The spine is ok with all text legible - but there is a small knock in the middle with a couple of stress creases. Overall it still retains excellent rigidity.
Insert (Vg+) In very nice order. Very flat with sharp edges - little sign of creasing. Only slight downside is a bit of light foxing in places visible on the white Apple side.
