Description
Dark red label with silver text. Deep groove, original. 2 records in a box. This is a "live" concert recording. The event took place at Ohio State University on March 3, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio. Leader, George Lewis, clarinet; Avery Kid Howard, trumpet, vocals; Jim Robinson, trombone; Alton Purnell, piano, vocals; Lawrence Marrero, bajo; Alcide Pavageau, bass; Joe Watkins,drums, vocals. The record are in their original box, complete with a 4 page, illustrated brochure that details some historic information about the group.The brochure shows light aging. The person introducing the Band is possibly Reverend A.W.Kershaw, Minister of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Box: Good(-) All corners of the front and back sections of the box have broken and have been repaired with aging scotch tape. Most of the tape no longer secures the box. All sides of the box are attached, though loose. Some white adhesive paper, 1" wide, has been applied to the bottom of the back of the box though it does not seem to serve a function. There are some creases and split on the edges but no paper loss. The cover shows general wear and some aging.
Records: VG Visually shows moderate wear with several surface rub marks on each side. A general summary of the condition is as follows: Track 1, Side 1 has the introduction, possibly by Reverend Kershaw. There are a few light clicks during the introduction as well as a few clicks on the balance of Slide 1. Side 2, Track 1 has several light clicks at the beginning of the Track; 4 faint clicks at the beginning of Track 3 and a few along the Track. All are barely audible and random. 1 more audible click on Track 4 with several lighter additional clicks. On Track 5, 4 clicks near the beginning of the Track with some crackling and a few revolutions that follow have some light groove noise. Some crackling on Track 6 that persist through the entire Track.
Side 3, Track 1 has groove noise on several revolutions at the beginning of the Track. There are few and less audible clicks on Track 2. Some light clicks at the end of Track 3. A few clicks towards the end of Track 4. On Side 4,Track 1 there is groove noise that repetes throughout the entire Track. This condition repetes on Tracks 2 and 3. Much less noise on Track 5 and little on the balance of the Side. The records have been played frequently.
There is a small tear on 1 label on each LP. Possibly from a former sticker. These do not affect the text on the labels. The music is exciting and for the most part the music dominates the surface noise. I have tried to give an entire summary of condition. It is rare to find an original copy of the LP recording. Audibly checked.
