Description

Historic 1927 Victor 35822 12-inch 78 RPM recording of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, performed by Paul Whiteman and His Concert Orchestra with George Gershwin himself at the piano.

Side A: Rhapsody in Blue – Part 1
Side B: Rhapsody in Blue – Part 2

This is the celebrated second Whiteman/Gershwin recording of the work and the first electrically recorded version, made after Victor had adopted microphone-based electrical recording. The earlier 1924 Victor recording, catalog 55225, was made acoustically through recording horns. Victor 35822 was recorded in New York on April 21, 1927 and issued that summer.

The original black-and-gold Victor labels carry the VE / Orthophonic Recording designation. The label itself identifies the performer at the piano simply and wonderfully as “The Composer at the piano.”

Arranged by Ferde Grofé, whose orchestration was integral to the original conception and sound of Rhapsody in Blue. The documented matrices for this electrical recording are CVE-30174 for Part 1 and CVE-30173 for Part 2.

This is consequently much more than an ordinary late-1920s orchestral 78: it preserves Gershwin performing his own landmark composition, accompanied by the orchestra for which the piece had originally been commissioned.

Condition:
Record plays VG+ audio. Attractive glossy shellac with age-appropriate handling marks visible under strong light. Labels remain especially attractive with strong black-and-gold presentation.

A terrific historical recording for collectors of George Gershwin, Paul Whiteman, early jazz, American classical music, Victor Orthophonic records and important prewar 78s.

NOTE: Please consider that your audio equipment blows mine away and the record will invariably sound better on your system. Also, I do not have the ability to professionally clean records and give one static brush before ONE sampling, then back into the sleeve and jacket. My goal is to give you all you need for a transparent purchasing experience.
