Description
The Grateful Dead played the Felt Forum (located below Madison Square Garden in New York City) on December 5, 1971, as part of a four-night run that took place between December 4 and December 7, 1971. This was the band's only appearance at the Felt Forum. The New Riders of the Purple Sage opened these shows. The December 5, 1971, performance was broadcast on WNEW-FM in New York. This show featured the band in a transitional period, with Keith Godchaux recently joining on keyboards and Pigpen rejoining after a hospital stay. The show included a rare performance of "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water" and has been praised by fans for its high energy and excellent sound quality, especially considering it was a radio broadcast. Some sources consider it a "dress rehearsal" for their upcoming Europe '72 tour.
