Shakedown Street

Original authentic Pressing

Grateful Dead 1978 vinyl LP – AB 4198

This is the real deal purchased the week it was released in 1978 and has remained in the same Deadicated home ever since….though mostly stored in a box the last 20-or-so years. This is not one of the several re-issues of this album.

Great setlist from “Good Lovin’” to “Fire on the Mountain” on Side 1 and “Miracle” to “If I Had a World” on Side 2. And, of course, “Shakedown Street.”

The vinyl record is in VG+ condition (please read the grading standards below). Some scratches and scuffs, general wear. Inscribed AB 4198 and has the “Sterling” (lacquer) credit in the runouts….

The cover, featuring art by underground comic-book artist Gilbert Shelton, grades VG+. It has some minor issues: right lower corner is dinged; some shelf wear most notably on the lower left edge; scuffs on front top and some shelf line there too….all minor with no splits and zero ring wear on front and barely visible on back. The spine is totally legible. The original sleeve (ordinary, no photos or text) has a rip on the center hole.

Email me if you have any questions.

And thanks for looking!

Please note that this album is visually inspected and graded only. Grading is hard to do and subjective, but I try to err on the side of conservative grading so, hopefully, the product is in as good or slightly better shape than the grade it gets. That said, here’s kind of how the grading stacks up:

VINYL DISC GRADING:

Mint (M): Not new but probably never played and usually sealed, visually and audibly perfect. Like from the factory almost.

Near Mint (NM): The record has been opened and maybe even played, but appears to be free of marks, scuffs, scratches or visual defects, though might have very slight inner sleeve rub.

Excellent (EX): A step down from NM typically due to a few marks or light scratches or hairlines, and general signs of use. Should be no audible issues.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Minor wear, more faults are visible including a few light scratches and scuffs; Audibly, might be some scratches or crackles but nothing compromising.

Very Good (VG): Like VG+ but more visual faults apparent, including scuffs and some obvious scratches, possible groove wear, but should still be an enjoyable record to hear.

Good Plus (G+): Has been used and played a lot, shows moderate scratches (some detectable with fingernail) and scuffs. Still playable but may have some clicks, pops and scratches.

Good (G): Definitely seen better days and probably shows heavy wear, many scratches, might even be slightly warped. Still might have its greatest value as a collectible or for sentimental reasons other than quality of its sound.

COVER GRADING

Mint (M): Looks brand new though not sealed.

Near Mint (NM): No creases, no ring wear, no seam splits, no cutouts, no stains.

Excellent (EX): Very slight seam or shelf wear; probably on a corner or two; practically no ring wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Minor seam wear, very slight ring wear or shelf soiling possible; maybe some corner(s) dinged; no more than a single split less than 1 inch; title on spine readable or perfect.

Very Good (VG): Normal wear considering age of album; Signs of handling; some ring wear on front and/or back covers; seam splits on two or three sides; title on spine mostly readable; price tag, writing or cutout marking visible.

Good Plus (G+): Obvious ring wear; significant seam splits; dog-eared corners; title on spine not readable

Good (G): Like G+ but worse…heavy wear and might show some damage; definitely has lived its lifetime; maybe works as an artifact or collectible.

SLEEVES:

No standard grades for generic sleeves, even if from back in the day…though if they’re terrible or nearly perfect I’ll note that. If they’re missing, I replace them with new lined protective sleeves. Otherwise, when original album sleeves feature band photos, lyrics or credits, or promotional material, that will be mentioned in the condition description.
