Full Album Description Item Overview & Critical Rarity Metrics Up for auction is an exceptionally scarce and highly sought-after original 1970 US first stereo pressing of the roots-rock masterpiece Workingman's Dead by The Grateful Dead on Warner Bros. Records (WS 1869). This particular copy is an absolute holy grail for variant hunters and features the legendary "Upside-Down Back Cover" production error. When the first batch of jackets was manufactured in mid-1970, the printing sheets for the reverse side were accidentally fed into the machinery upside down relative to the front cover layout. This resulted in the iconic band portraits, track titles, and credits being completely inverted when you flip the record over horizontally. Warner Bros. quickly corrected this misprint on subsequent pressings, leaving this original first-state error highly prized. Label & Insert Verification
  • The Labels: Features the authentic, highly collectible original 1970 WB Olive Green center labels with the classic gold shield logo at the top.
  • The Insert: Comes complete with its highly elusive original 1970 lyric insert sheet, featuring the iconic sepia-toned vintage photo titled "Saturday, September 23, 1911, Burbank, California". Most surviving copies lost this paper sheet decades ago.
Condition Profile (Honest & Fully Transparent)
  • Vinyl Condition: Very Good Plus (VG+). The vinyl disc itself looks spectacular under a bright light, retaining its original deep, glossy mirror shine with exceptionally clean surfaces. The green labels are pristine, entirely free of stray ink, stickers, or notable tracking wear around the spindle hole. An audiophile-grade play copy.
  • Jacket Condition: Very Good (VG). This sleeve carries the beautiful, honest character of a true 1970s classic rock survivor. The front and rear graphics remain clear and sharp. Shows honest edge wear, minor chipping, and a tiny, clean paper tear along the bottom right margin of the back cover. The side seams and spine remain structurally stable.
  • Lyric Insert Condition: Good Plus (G+). The lyric sheets and photos are entirely clean and fully legible. Note: There is a heavy tear and folding crease damage localized on the bottom-left corner edge, as clearly documented in the reference photos.
Tracklist
  • Side One: Uncle John's Band, High Time, Dire Wolf, New Speedway Boogie.
  • Side Two: Cumberland Blues, Black Peter, Easy Wind, Casey Jones.
