This handsome LP from Philips (SAL 3650 / 802 785 LY, UK pressing, plum/silver label, stereo) features Arthur Grumiaux’s brilliant accounts of Berg’s Violin Concerto and Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, both landmarks in the composers’ discographies.

Alban Berg: Violin Concerto (“To the Memory of an Angel”)

> with Igor Markevitch conducting the Concertgebouw Orkest

(rec. in the Grote Zaal, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, on 23 January 1967)

Igor Stravinsky: Violin Concerto in D Major

> with Ernest Bour conducting the Concertgebouw Orkest

(rec. in the Grote Zaal, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, on 19 December 1966)

There are informative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Bernard Jacobson, printed in English only. The striking cover photo of Grumiaux is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is bumping/wear at corners, as well as minor creasing. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive. Overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
