HAMPTON GREASE BAND
MUSIC TO EAT
1971 GATEFOLD DOUBLE LP
Columbia Records
G 3055
Chances are good that if you're even viewing this listing you know about the Hampton Grease Band. For those not in the know, they are often mis-classified as a blues or psychedelic rock band. In actuality, they are southern fried prog-rock with Dada-esque and surrealistic vocals and lyrics. Bruce Hampton's (aka. Col. Hampton B. Coles, Ret.) singing voice is certainly an acquired taste (much in the same way as Capt. Beefheart) but just right for the material. I saw this band twice, opening for Zappa and the Mothers and Alice Cooper, and while they couldn't upstage either of those acts, they did leave an impression. There's no pretension in this brand of progressive rock, just solid musicianship and vocal weirdness. Music to Eat is apocryphally said to have been the second-lowest selling album in Columbia's history, second only to a yoga instructional record, the obvious reason for its rarity. Not surprising, having gotten zero promotion, publicity or radio play from the Columbia PR dept.
Cover is VG+, mainly due to the cut corners. Vinyl has been completely play-tested and sounded Near Mint, but the first record has some barely visible (and not audible) marks on it. The second has no marks not and looks unplayed (except for when I played it) so to avoid any quibble, we'll just call it Excellent. A better copy you might find...sealed.
