Label/Format: Liberty – second issue black format with matt finish and a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Any traces of spindle marks are very fine and faint, hardly any at all. Almost the same for handling traces on the very revealing dark labels, a trace near the hole on side one, little else.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Moderately scarce on this label. Initially and very briefly pressed on the blue Liberty label by Philips, these in small numbers and selling the same, few even survive in better conditions, the cover is the same. This still early repressing manufactured by EMI. Early copies especially bought by younger music fans who dared to experiment with new more out-there bands, few were hi-fi buffs, thus more often seen in very poor conditions – that’s cover, record and sound. So never any hesitation in offering clean examples of the black pressed copies that are little less easy to find nice.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Amazing to think this album is around 46 years old, and the band, albeit in many different guises, are still recording and touring today. This is not so much a typical Hawkwind album and remains a fascinating curio, it merges 1967 psychedelia with spacy instrumentals that blend into early acid-rock, at times sounding like a less polished Pink Floyd circa Saucerful of Secrets. Not the most technically gifted band ever, this album received minimal attention when first issued, but its stature as one of the best British psych albums has grown immensely with time. Initially it tried recording all the songs separately, but that failed to work, so the whole album was recorded live in a studio in one take. Much of the music is free-form improvisation with spacy sounds and effects, captivating and compelling and certainly highly entertaining. The opening song is a Hawkwind classic, the untypical and brilliant ‘Hurry on Sundown’ with acoustic guitars and harmonica, but the long trippy ‘Be Yourself’ and ‘Paranoia’ with improvised guitar are far more typical of their early sound. The front cover gives more than a clue of what to expect, with the band name spelt out in marijuana leaves, this mini-classic debut album is the embryo and catalyst of the acid-rock space band they later became with more than a fair degree of success. Needless to say, this album did not chart, and has now become a highly popular and collectable album to own on whichever label you choose. However, the blue label first issue is rare, very hard to find in better condition and very expensive. So many fans and collectors are ‘happy’ to compromise with a still early black label version. This is a true classic most rock and prog fans want in their collection.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. As per most, the spine has faded in natural light. An unlaminated, gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day Ltd. Includes the basic plain white unlined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Yes, another wear-prone non-laminate that is seldom seen without often considerable ageing and issues. This has little wear and retains excellent colour, only the merest trace of fading on the spine fold as seen from the front view. Clean with any marks or creasing little, gentle, small and faint, this remains attractive and pleasing to the eye.

Cover Back: Largely the same with only a gentle rim rub arc near the bottom edge. This most often seen with deep penetrating full-circle ring wear which this has clearly avoided as seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces look practically as made with deep fresh colour.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush, any rubbing fine, light and patchy.

Bottom Edges: As above except more rubbing on the back edge. These deeper coloured storage edges seldom escape without some wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal hint of wear. Any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal hint of compression, also neatly folded. The surface has naturally faded, this very common on this spine that clearly is affected by natural light, but has no physical wear. The text is difficult to see, even under a magnifier, but actually is present, but faded.

Corners: Most corners have only very small and light rubbing, moderate on the bottom back right. Mostly excellent shape retained, any evidence of dinking tiny and very light.

Cover Summary: Always a difficult cover and seldom seen even this nice. Yes, some mildish edge rubbing and almost the mandatory natural light fading of the spine edge, but the more interesting main areas are very impressive. So this cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: but this does have a retail price and number on one corner area. The owner kept this record inside a replacement inner sleeve (as many did), so this inner is a replacement and the nearest I had to the original, so basically the number does not match the record. A basic plain solid white unlined inner (and not too hard to find another if deemed necessary). This actually looks better than my grading with little else to fault. Clean and hardly aged, the paper still white with minimal toning of the seam adhesive and barely creased. All edges solidly intact with no splits, tears or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing very little used, and then with utmost care with any surface traces very fine, light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a lovely rare record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, an album with some quiet passages and always a real challenge for vintage vinyl, none more so than the very start of side two – a gentle beginning that is so hard to find ‘perfect’, and few ever will be. Overall, a very clean pressing with no tracking issues*, the detail and sonic delivery of the music is hugely impressive. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Putting a record of this age and type into true perspective – it has survived very well indeed and seen or heard few better. Even early black label examples are most-often seen badly scratched, very heavily used, abused and often trashed. I am sure this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album and copy – the odd crackle trace or sporadic gentle click near impossible avoid totally. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
