'Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music'
United Artists, UK, 1976
CDS 4004
IN 1973 HAWKWIND defied their detractors by scoring a resolutely classic hit single with 'Silver Machine'. Sung by bass buster Lemmy the band's wacky blend of hard rock, progressive rock and space rock ushered them to the forefront of a movement that seemed to thrive on chaos and experimentation. 'Amazing Sounds...' is no exception to that rule showcasing a band eager to capitalise on that momentum. The music is exhaustive churning space rock launched on the back of the seven minute long 'Reefer Madness', a super amalgam of everything 'wind-tastic' including Dave Brock on blast furnace guitar. Check out the equally slothful 'Steppenwolf' and the revved up and ready 'Kerb Crawler', the natural heir to the seminal Motorhead track.
The artwork, as always, is crucial to the plot - from the very capable fingers of long time cohort Barney Bubbles - evoking a strange half world.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
