Condition: Record is near mint, and the jacket is also; was sealed - opened by me recently and played 1x to transfer to CD: wow! Have a listen to the vintage stereo sound - this transparent RED LP plays mostly like new, although there is one area with some surface static, I will record that so you can hear it. It does not ruin the experience of the album. The jacket is in like new condition too - see photos. Comes with audiophile sleeve.

COMMENT:  Audio Fidelity has hit the ball out of the park with this vinyl release of the original Vangelis soundtrack. It's on 180-gram red translucent vinyl, the dozen tracks mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. The vinyl is pressed at Chad Kassem’s 21,000-square-foot Quality Record Pressings plant in Salina, Kansas. As a physical object, the album is a lovely thing. The jacket’s front is a heavy, glossy, beautifully rendered full-color reproduction of the artwork seen first on the CD. The back of the gatefold carries the same art as the back of the CD. Inside, all but two of the photos found in the CD’s booklet are duplicated, and the missing photos are used for the record labels. Neat!

When the stylus finally hit the groove for the first time, I heard dead quiet and then the slow, deep, ethereal synthesized drone (courtesy of a Yamaha CS-80) setting the stage for Harrison Ford’s voice. From that point on I knew I was in for a ride into the magical world of Vangelis’s soundscapes, the music ebbing and flowing in and around the various melodies etched into my memories of the movie itself.

The treble was airy and fast, just what‘s needed for music with a lot of percussion effects. Check out the cymbal crash on side one. It had impact and sounded like hammered brass as it shimmered in its own cushion of air.

This music has been beautifully characterized by Paul Sammon in his book Future Noir as "futuristic nostalgia. . .a dizzying melange of unabashed romanticism, ominous electronic rumblings, gutter-level blues, delicate celestial shadings, and heartbreaking melancholy." I wholeheartedly agree. Add to that state-of-the-art sound and you have a treasure, and one long overdue.

VINYL
Near Mint is a record that has most of the original luster and has probably only been played a handful of times. There is little likelihood of any marks on the vinyl or objectionable surface noise. Label is clean without wear; no spindle wear.

Excellent is a record that has good original luster and has experienced light play. There is the possibility of a few light surface lines and swirls but only minor surface noise. Label is clean with little if any wear; little or no spindle wear.

Very Good Plus is a record that falls in between Very Good and Excellent.

Very Good is a record that has marginal original luster and has experienced moderate play. There is the likelihood of surface marks that may contribute to sporadic surface noise in the form of tics, “static”, and so forth. Label shows wear, and there is spindle wear evident.

GRADING
ALBUM JACKET

Near Mint is a jacket that may or may not still be in original shrink (opened), having no seam splits, edge wear, or ring wear, nor faded colors. Such albums look and feel sturdy and like new.

Excellent is a jacket that is very similar to Near Mint except there may be a crease, or slight wear overall. There are no seam splits or ring wear, and colors are still vibrant.

Very Good Plus is a jacket that falls in between Very Good and Excellent.

Very Good is a jacket that has may have any of the following: general moderate wear, ring wear, seam splits, edge wear or taped edges. Colors show fading; whites are often somewhat yellowed.
