HIGH SPEED AND THE AFFLICTED MAN - GET STONED EZY - HEAVY PSYCH - NEW

Largely unknown for 20+ years before being rescued from obscurity by Internet taste-makers, Get Stoned Ezy is something of a Holy Grail in terms of tripped out psych-punk, the missing link between Hawkwind and Monoshock and the early days of PSF Records. The Afflicted Man was more or less one man - Steve Hall - who cut his teeth in the late 70s punk scene and ended up with The Accursed!. Somewhere in the middle of that, though, the man became obsessed with the extreme excess of late-60s/early-70s psych rock (and probably a healthy dose of Mick Farren) and decided to cut a record heavy on guitar effects and jams, but decidedly indebted to punk rock's sneering attitude.
Well, mission accomplished, I guess. This album's vision is stunningly singular in terms of sheer primitiveness and howling fury, with Hall coming off as the rabid leader and center of the sinister inferno that swells from your speakers when you let this one blast. His vocals are almost always shouted and are pretty much entirely indecipherable, though he definitely seems intent on malice. The rhythm section is concerned with little more than framing Hall's vicious guitar, which churns out riffs repeated ad infinitum and run through any number of pedals, providing the tripped-out, druggy atmosphere that probably made this way too weird for any punk crowd. For the psych heads this was probably way too aggressive; in the context of 1982, it's something like the evil step-brother of Bobb Trimble's Harvest of Dreams. While that album used pristine production and tender naivety to propel its songs into the stratosphere, the sound here is scuzzy, lethal, pissed off. Which is great, because maybe it's more versatile: you can light up a joint and nod your head to the considerable grooves, or crack open a beer and break shit to its anarchic fervor. Either way, it's great, driving music, and deserves to be heard by anyone who digs punk and psych in equal doses.
