Jangly, happy people would be one way to describe what The Hit Parade sound like on first impressions of this retrospective compilation. Openers 'The First Time' and 'You Didn't Love Me Then' are perfectly positive tracks, even if the latter is really a bittersweet ode to redemption after heartbreak at the expense of someone else's wants and needs (albeit their wants and needs are really derived from the fact they can't have you, rather than genuine desire).

Far from an overly in-depth analysis of a single song's prose, the themes in that track give a good insight into The Hit Parade overall. The band have a deft ability to write instrumentals that immediately captivate and warm the heart, while penning lines that are often damaged, vulnerable, and life affirming in deceptively deep ways. A classic example of what makes pop great.
