Chess Records make their mating move, as Howlin' Wolf's first LP Moanin' In The Moonlight returns as part of their 75th anniversary reissue run, in turn honouring the Chicago label's landmark year. First released way ago in 1959, the LP compiles singles Wolf cut after crossing the Mississippi Delta, marking his shift from Memphis sessions with Sam Phillips to the raw, electrified Chicago blues sound that defined his career. Backed by Hubert Sumlin's stinging guitar and Willie Dixon's songwriting, the set brims with classics: 'Smokestack Lightnin', 'How Many More Years', 'Evil (Is Going On)', and the eerie opener 'Moanin' At Midnight'. This 2025 edition places the record in context as both a document of Wolf's migration north and a cornerstone of postwar blues.
