Description
H.P. LOVECRAFT – Live: May 11, 1968. Sundazed LP 5526. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued on Sundazed Records (LP 5004) in 1991. Recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, California. This edition issued in 2016 with different cover art; though the front photo comes from the same photo shoot as was used on the previous edition. All editions digitally transferred and mastered from the original analog tapes; resulting in an amazingly high quality recording for a live rock concert from this time period. Besides the different cover art, you only get a taste of Jeff Jarema’s extensive (and excellent) band history liner notes that filled the back of the 1991 release’s record jacket. MEMBERS: George Edwards (vocals, rhythm guitar), Dave Michaels (vocals, keyboards), Tony Cavallari (lead guitar), Jeff Boyan (bass, backing vocals), and Michael Tegza (drums).
TRACKS:
SIDE ONE:
01) Wayfaring Stranger (10:16)
02) The Drifter (8:19)
03) It’s About Time (5:24)
SIDE TWO:
04) The White Ship (6:59)
05) At The Mountains Of Madness (4:30)
06) That’s The Bag I’m In (3:33)
07) I’ve Been Wrong Before (2:50)
08) Country Boy & Bleeker Street (3:42)
DESCRIPTION: Blessed with one of the best live recording qualities one can hear from a '60s effort -- especially considering that H.P. Lovecraft was never a major success -- Live May 11, 1968 provides a reasonable alternate way for the curious to find out what the shouting was all about (compare these versions to the ones that appear on their two studio albums). Split almost evenly between first and second album material, and featuring then-new bassist Jeff Boyan (brought in to replace Jerry McGeorge and finalize the line-up that would record their 2nd album, II), this release shows that the quintet certainly had something. If there are plenty of moments where the addictive blend of garage jamming and mindblown psychedelia seems on the verge of collapsing into noodling or bad Doors imitations, there's enough of H.P. Lovecraft's own particular approach to justify a listen by anyone into exploratory late-'60s rock. Certainly once or twice the band ends up sounding remarkably prescient -- the opening of Wayfaring Stranger calls to mind the blend of propulsion and trance Can would shortly make its own in Germany, with Tegza's tight beats leading the way. Plenty of other examples can be noted, with the transferred tape itself further suggesting the European group's approach -- check the midsection of The Drifter, where only Michaels' keyboards steer away from the driving rhythm. Edwards and Michaels' lead vocals work great together live -- their training and earlier studio experience showing well -- and the whole band tackles the spirit of the times to a T. Two standout performances are the one-two punch of The White Ship and At The Mountain of Madness, both of which also make for the perfect tribute to the original Lovecraft himself. Occasional introductory comments surface from Edwards, but otherwise the five just get it all together and take off -- and do so quite well. Highly recommended! I bought my vinyl copy back in 1992, being a big fan of the band, and just finished up listening to side 2 as I wrapped up putting this description together; an incredibly powerful performance; I’d call this essential listening. My first exposure to H.P. Lovecraft came in 1969 on Chicago FM radio where I heard The White Ship regularly and Nothing’s Boy which appears on H.P. Lovecraft II, as recited by Ken Nordine with some funny voices, tape manipulation, and trippy echo (which was also my first taste of Ken Nordine). I’ll tell you about Bangor Flying Circus playing at my highschool later; in the mean time pick this live H.P. Lovecraft up, you need it!
THIS ITEM IS NEW AND UNPLAYED. Used items will include condition details for the cover, disc, inserts, etc.
NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS: If the jacket or disc (unless sealed) is punched, marked, or cut in any manner, denoting a promotional/review copy, I will state that as part of the item description. If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience.
All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
