Space rock band Hum's third album "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" is somewhat of a mix match, containing some gorgeous melodies along with some mind blowing distortion. Then at the same time is has a dull feeling that comes in waves and then disappears within minutes. I became familiar with this band because of the song "I'd Like Your Hair Long" which is included in this album (track 7). It grabbed my attention right away and brought me back to the short lived shoegazing stage. The song was almost like Catherine Wheel meets Smog...I think that sums up Hum as a band. Lush, gentle melodies that explode into the deafening sound of noisy guitars.
The album starts out rather poorly, with the tracks "Little Dipper" and "The Pod" doing little to impress. It is the third track "Stars" that grabs you and carries you into a different state of mind. I compare it to Brand New's song "Jesus Christ" in the way that it starts out beautifully and then transforms into this some what loud epic song. "The Very Old Man" is another highlight for "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" and keeps the middle of the album up to standards. "I'd Like Your Hair Long" and "I Hate It Too" are (in my opinion) the real singles of the album. They are solid rock songs with catchy chorus and nice guitar hooks. The album ends with "Songs of Farewell and Departure" which is a pleasant song and concludes the album nicely.
This isn't a record that I play often, but it is nice enough. Time seems to come to a stop when ever I listen to this album which can be both good and bad. Listen to it and judge for yourself, I'm glad that it is in my grubby little hands even if it is not perfect.

sleeve may have medium overall wear or some ring wear.
VG+ = overall wear, but no skips of serious defects, more noisy sound during quiet passages…
sleeve is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear.
VG = plays a lot, heavy wear on record and cover…guarantee does not apply to vg- or worse
condition records.
