Brief Info: A live double set that proved a steady, rather than major seller, thus first issues are quite difficult to find, especially in better condition. It still featured Peter Frampton, but he left the band prior to the album’s release. This a very fine UK original, and heavily pressed by Pye on red translucent vinyl (this affect only seen when held in front of a bright light source like a light bulb). These appearing little played and very well pressed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better for this one. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howard’s Printers, includes the two A&M promotional inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Another challenging dark matt gatefold cover that rarely escapes often heavy ring wear, rubbing, sticker issues and creasing. Of these, this has only light rim arc rubbing near the top and bottom. In context, this front has fared very well, especially with such heavy records inside for around 48 years. Certainly one of the best I have seen in ages.

Cover Back: The back is superb, and against the odds, has only the merest trace of rim rubbing (look very hard to see any). Again, little else to really fault.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and flush with barely any wear.

Bottom Edges: Any rubbing to these storage edges is very light and equally patchy, most near the right ends. Few will have less here.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enter on these edges, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: An immaculate, nigh-on perfect spine as-seen. Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the surface, and even the folds avoiding the usual rubbing and scuffs.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This still attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: the A&M promotional inners are a matching pair and were unlined. A little mild discolouration to politely remind of age, minimal creasing and all edges (against the odds) intact with no repairs. A little mild wear near the top entrances only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on red translucent vinyl. ‘Translucent’ means light will pass through the object, so when these records are held to a bright light source (e.g. a light bulb), they glow red as I have tried to show in my pictures. Seen in normal daylight, both records appear as a standard black copy, only in front of a bulb is the red effect seen. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality double live set play even above their high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. This does have some quiet passages, so the odd sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid totally. Few available copies will outperform this very early red translucent pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these records. They will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
