Yes, original Australian-only release…9 tracks...this is the album devised by the head of Phantom (who was that guy?) to give away at the 10th anniversary of the Phantom Records store opening...wherein he asked the then current 5 bands on his roster, to do cover versions of bands from the first era of the label (1980-83)...and this was a good year before Atlantic Records 'came up with' the idea for their 40th anniversary (NOT that anyone's accusing them of filching the concept...how would they have known some indie label on the other side of the world had pre-empted their magnificent idea...'that guy' did however mail them a copy once theirs had come out)...anyway...moving on...the anniversary was celebrated by a huge gig at the Paddington RSL club in Sydney on 14th October 1988, MC'ed by H.G. Nelson and Tony Biggs of Triple J, where the bands played (in the order they'd been signed)...leading off with the Shrinking Violets, then the Hummingbirds, Vanilla Chainsaws, a surprise acoustic set by Jeff and Julie of the Flaming Hands, followed by a huge lolly scramble (really) wherein 50 record vouchers of various amounts totalling $2,000 were hidden in the wrappers, and turfed out into the audience by Biggsy, H.G., and 'that guy' again (quite a hoot)...and then the Deadly Hume came on and blew the goddamn roof off the place ...(the Mark Of Cain were actually signed for their first single at the time, but hadn't been able to make it up from Adelaide for the event)...so anyway, this LP was given free to anyone who wandered in to Phantom with their gig ticket over the next few weeks back then...only 800 were pressed and they were gone within a couple of months... -Trackwise, what they got (and what you now have the chance of owning) is the following:

1. VANILLA CHAINSAWS - "AVERAGE INADEQUACY" (originally by Machinations) - they take this synth-driven electro-pop hit and infuse it with their own Husker Du/TSOL-inspired punk-pop feel (no synth on this!) - 'Mark Alexander's brilliant guitar lines in the background there adding even more melody to what had always been a stroke of virtually unbeatable melodic genius - a mega version' - and Simon Drew/Chainsaw's vocals are utterly inspired....they made this close to one of their best songs AND they embraced it fully by including it their set on the night and a few other times...wait till you hear it...friggin' AWESOME!!

2. SHRINKING VIOLETS - "LOVE TO RULE" (Sunnyboys) - these guys had such a great grip on the melodic semi-psychedelic jangle of the Rain Parade, often with a guitar sound similar to the Edge's work on all those great early U2 singles...they do a pretty faithfull version of this power-pop classic

3. the MARK OF CAIN - "SEEIN' DOUBLE" (Shy Impostors) - OK, this is where it gets menacing and dark and fierce - they turn this now highly collectable melodic punk-pop single into 'a grungey thumping rumble-fest all their own - it's mean and pounding as hell and has a coupla chilling tortured screams in there just for BAD measure'...it's incredible!!

4. the HUMMINGBIRDS - "LEILANI" (Le Hoodoo Gurus) - Simon pulls out the fuzz pedal and he and Alannah moan and gyrate their way through this in full deconstruction mode..but is it good?...you work it out...I love it

5. SHRINKING VIOLETS - "TAKE ME AWAY" (the Kelpies) - packed with melody anyway, and a killer punk gem in the first place, these guys push all the melody into a Byrds-ian jangle-fest...again, brilliant!

6. the HUMMINGBIRDS - "IT'S JUST THAT I MISS YOU" (Flaming Hands) - sheer magnificence!!! - Alannah and Robyn's dual lead vocals are positively dreamy and truly truly beautiful, and Simon's Dinosaur Jr-inspired guitar majestry take this song to realms I'm sure Jeff Sullivan never dreamed of when he wrote it...stunning!

7. VANILLA CHAINSAWS - "TEN YEARS ON" (the Dagoes) - Adelaide's finest was responsible for this, Phantom's 10th release back in July '81 - there's a theme going on with that number - the VC's again master the melody and vocal lines wonderfully and turn it into another late Husker Du-inspired punk-pop masterpiece!!!

8. the MARK OF CAIN - "JOURNEY BY SLEDGE" (the Visitors) - apocalyptic! - as much as the original was a powerful driving 'thing' with a degree of ferocity all it's own, the MOC add an urgency all their own and turn it into a pounding sledgehammer-driven monster...needs to be cranked massively and screamed along to.

9. the DEADLY HUME - "I HATE YOU" (Sardine v) - again, this is amped up way beyond the original - it motors along at an utterly furious pace, all feedback and melody and those awesome Greg Perano vocals, loaded with as much (if not more) venom as Ian Rilen mustered himself on the original...Ron Hadley's guitar is relentless...you will not believe how good this is!!

...And that's the journey, one you'll be so friggin' happy you took. The album comes with a fully detailed discography of Phantom's first ten years, plus a lengthy rant about it all, and a roll call of all the staff up till then (e.g. didja know that Rob Younger [Radio Birdman/New Christs], Brett Myers [Died Pretty], Simon Holmes [Hummingbirds], Ray Medhurst [Rockmelons], Peter Mengede [Helmet], Greg Atkinson [Ups & Downs/Big Heavy Stuff], Jim Dickson [Survivors/Barracudas/New Christs/Radio Birdamn], the 3 guys that started Waterfront Records, John Foy [of poster art fame and owner of the Red Eye label]...plus...and not forgetting, the manager of Collette [?!]...all worked behind the counter there at some stage?)
