In the late 80s, when cross-cultural projects often felt forced, Zakir Hussain's collaboration with John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek and Hariprasad Chaurasia offered something subtler - a meeting of instincts, not aesthetics. 'Making Music' opens like a slow alignment of temperaments, Garbarek's sax tracing the tabla's pulse before McLaughlin's guitar cuts through with clipped rhythmic phrasing. On 'Toni' and 'Water Girl', texture replaces virtuosity; melodic fragments hover then dissolve, the ensemble moving with an almost telepathic restraint. By 'Anisa', they've entered devotional terrain, where silence is as expressive as sound. It remains a rare balance of intellect and intuition. It's music that doesn't fuse so much as coexist, each player holding space for the other until genre itself quietly disappears.
