Up for auction is a rare private press LP by Harbinger.
Borrowing a detailed description from another seller who previously offered this LP -
Unknown to most 60s/70s collectors until its discovery a few years ago, this is the beyond rare second album released by loner/downer folk legend Dave Bixby. The man on the cover is Don DeGraaf, leader of The Movement, a cult rooted in Grand Rapids that produced this album and Dan Bixby's solo album Ode to Quetzalcoatl. Don DeGraaf aka "Sir" was the bass player for Harbinger. You can guess what the music is about.
The album was sold exclusively at concerts in Michigan and Ohio. Most of the material was written around the same time as Ode to Quetzalcoatl, in the span of a mere month and a half. According to Bixby: “I think this second album had more people in it, so you're gonna get a little more aliveness because there's more than just David Bixby in there.”
Musically it is equally as good and very similar to the first one but this time the recording took place in a professional studio located at Grand Rapids, so the sound is improved.
Bixby is joined by Brian MacInness on guitar, Sandy Johnson on vocals and Don DeGraaf on bass and production duties. Don was in fact leader of the, in the end, religious destructive cult known as “The Group”, of which Bixby and Brian were part of.
The sound is more up-front and the songs are slightly optimistic compared to the ones on Ode to Quetzalcoatl. There’s plenty of acoustic 12-string raga guitars and harmony male/female vocals. The lyrics deal with cosmic imagery, psychedelics and religious/biblical references but this goes much deeper than any Xian record.
As you can see from the photos, this record is in excellent condition. As vinyl and sleeve are as close to NM- as you can get, with one exception. There is a small white mark in the middle of side 2. I honestly have no idea what it is. Possibly a pressing defect? I did not want to make an attempt to remove it at the risk of damaging the record, so it is being sold as is. Causes a skip for a few seconds in that section only.
