Harold Farb (1923 - 2006) was born in Galveston, Texas, but his family moved to Houston when he was an infant. After graduating from Austin High School, he was drafted into WWII and served in Europe under General George Patton. His father owned a pharmacy and a couple of theaters before branching out into real estate. After returning home, Harold Farb spent a short period of time in his father's business before launching his own, specializing in the construction and management of large apartment complexes. He built and operated complexes totaling over 30,000 units in Houston alone and also expanded to other cities and states. It was said that, with over 60,000 units, he was the largest apartment owner in the entire world. By 1984, Farb was on the Fortune 400 list of wealthiest persons. But he also had a love of music dating to childhood and indulged himself as an entertainer. He did not limit himself to singing for family and friends, but performed for the public at a swanky supper club called "The Carlyle" that he had built specifically for that purpose. According to his obituaries and other recollections, Farb was known for his honesty and industry as a businessman. It is said that he frequently made impromptu visits to his apartment complexes and chatted with tenants about their concerns. He also was a major philanthropist, particularly in the arts and medical fields. His death, at age 83, has become controversial. He was found in his shower with his recently implanted hemodialysis catheter having been deliberately cut; he had bled out. Family members have long suspected that he was murdered, a conclusion supported by the review of an independent forensic pathologist. The case has never been solved.
