Description
That's right ladies and gentlemen, up for auction today is one of the remaining copies of Haymarket Square's lost 1968 psych rock album Magic Lantern.
Only 80-100 copies ever existed and this survivor is a beauty. Privately pressed by Chapparel Records in such a small edition as a soundtrack to the Baron & Bailey Light Circus at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinois. Allow me an obvious statement: These do not come up for sale very often.
Jacket is still a vibrant almost highlighter pink color. Paste on cover is still solid all around, not even a hint of ringwear. Back cover just as vibrant, just as solid, but has slight darkening in spots as seen in the photo all the way to the right of the text. A completely gorgeous example of the jacket. Under the printed name of circus member Bill Bailey is a cursive "Bill Bailey" in ball point pen. Unsure if this is an original signature, but seems likely as these were sold at the event. Photo 3 highlights this mark.
Vinyl is in great shape. Side A looks great with 3 or 4 light marks, I tried to take a picture as an example of the marks but they are so light that it was hard to bring them out in photograph. Side B has a few more marks than side A but they are similarly harmless. No marks affect play or sound.
This LP sounds great as a true 1968 original. I have played this copy with an ear dialed to the faint sounds of this album and have tried to be as detailed as I can be:
Side A begins with some standard noise on the lead in groove. It plays very well with some stray soft crackles in between songs or during quieter moments. Overall side A is quiet and sounds great. No clicks or pops to be heard.
Side B has similarly great sonics with no distortion or sibilance present. The soft crackles are more persistent on side B but fade as the side progresses only returning toward the very end. The music is by no means overpowered and the noise is not enough to offend. No clicks or pops on this side either demonstrating the marks mentioned earlier are superficial.
There is a very slight warp on the LP which does not affect play whatsoever.
Both Labels are extremely clean, bright, white. Side B has light spindle marks if you tilt the LP and the light hits it just so, Side A has no spindle marks to speak of.
Magic Lantern will be packed with the utmost care and shipped priority with the appropriate insurance to any of our United States.
If you have any questions or desire additional photos, please reach out! I want the LP going to a good spot and want its buyer to feel great about his/her purchase of a fairly represented product!
