Description

Head Over Heels. Head Over Heals. Capitol Records(ST-797). 1971. 1st Pressing.

Detroit, famous music Hell's Kitchen of America, greedily consumed and melted down anything, from urban blues to soul, and finally forged fast-living fearsome blue-collar rock. Tough and hostile grounds of Motor City readily harbored Grand Funk, riotous MC5 and Stooges, underrated SRC (I would have bought any album just because of "Black Sheep"), and brilliant Mutzie, doomed to obscurity, talented and promising Power of Zeus (but equally ill-fated).
Head Over Heels finally...
The story starts in 1966, when Mike Urso (bass guitar, vocals) met Paul Frank (guitar, vocals), and soon they were joined by Paul Bredeau (drums) - the new power-trio was born.
Theirs was guitar-driven hard-rock with strong vocals (Mike Urso and Paul Frank could really sing!) pushing to extremities the skills of musicians, and demanding total devotion.
In many aspects the music of Head Over Heels pre-dated later masterpieces (Urso and Frank didn't have power and finesse of David Coverdale, but legendary "Stormbringer" has many similarities, aesthetically at least; listen to "Right Away", for example); they were able to handle not-so-easy covers (their version of "Red Rooster" is one of the best), and to challenge Grand Funk (amazing "Circles").
This hard-hitting outfit was ignited by spontaneous drive, and couldn't go for long unnoticed - Head Over Heels were opening for Pacific Gas & Electric (also underestimated), Jethro Tull, Chicago, they were picked up by Frank Zappa for 13 days tour with "Mothers of Invention", which ended up with historical live gig at Bill Graham's Fillmore West (I wish it was recorded, and the tapes might re-surface before I die).
Debut album, recorded for Capitol in Hollywood and Detroit, was finally released in 1971.
Life is unfair generally, and life of rock musicians especially - Head Over Heels didn't become headliners and international stars, although they should be. Never mind, the album is a landmark in the history of world hard rock.

This is the original US release with red labels.
