Mel Smith & the Night Riders - Pretty Plaid Skirt b/w I’ll Never Change (Sue 713). Great Summer of 1959 rocker by the R&B singer born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1936. Smith first recorded for RCA Victor in 1952, with further sessions for the same company in 1953-1954, with later records following for smaller labels. Mel Smith & the Night Riders were a late 50s rhythm and blues/rock 'n' roll band known for their raucous show band style in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey areas. Their 1959 recording, "Pretty Plaid Skirt (And Long Black Sox)," is a well-regarded cult classic blending Bo Diddley beats with wild vocals. It includes: Melvin Smith (vocals, baritone sax), James "Doc" Starkes (bass, trombone), Harry Crafton (guitar), Joe Sewell (sax), Harry Van Walls (piano), and Jimmy Johnson (drums). Take a listen.
