The Huns – “Destination Lonely” b/w “Winning Ticket” Rock N’ Jazz 8668). Classic garage 45 from November of 1966 by this group out of Arlington Heights, Illinois, a suburb NW of Chicago. According to the site garagehangover.com (a good site to check with when you want to know about this style of music), “They cut one of the best double-sided 45s of the ’60s, the incredible, blasting “Destination Lonely” with the more tuneful “Winning Ticket.” Mostly students at St. Viator High School, the group was composed of David Grundhoefer (vocals), Bob Dempsey (lead guitar), Mark Abate (rhythm guitar), Bill McCaffrey (bass (also spelled Bill McCaffery in one source)), and Herb Klein (drums.) The 45 was issued in November, 1966 in two different versions: first with blue labels with a dry sound (no reverb), and then with red labels with added reverb on the vocals and jet noise overdubbed on “Winning Ticket.” The blue label has a slightly different intro to “Destination Lonely”: the opening chord is struck twice, while the red version has a leading chord before striking the next chord two times. Other than that, and the reverb added to the lead guitar and vocals, no real difference. So far – great. However, the record is in typical garage sale shape; not particularly well cared for. It has lots of light scuffs and light surface scratches, but it plays through nice on each side. Having gone for 4 figures several times in the past, a starting bid of 2% of that seems like a fair start and a chance for a bargain. Take a listen to a little of each side. I’ll call it G condition.
